Male indian rhino Beni, 7, was transferred from Pilsen to Chester yesterday. Could someone post when he arrives there, pls. Baabuu will go to Pilsen later this year.

I think you'll find these male exchanges are being made in order to establish a good (planned) genetic male/female pairing at Chester. I presume a female will then arrive after Baabu leaves. It could be 'Asha' from Whipsnade but not 100% certain about that.
 
Although above it says Baabu will go to Pilsen 'later this year' might he in fact go by return? Anybody?

I have no knowledge exactly when a female will arrive, but presumably the answer will be yes.

Establishing a potential breeding pair hasn't been a simple matter for them. 'Patna' had to be put down due to his bad leg, while female Baatschi was then sent away, a planned female from San Diego did not arrive and now Baabu will be leaving too.
 
Thèy had paths blocked off today because they were trying to move a rhino who was not being obliging!
 
To my mind Baabu spent far too long without another Greater one horned rhino for company at Chester.
Can anyone advise if he will be with another rhino at Pilsen.

There is one young cow Manjula at Plzen, the future breeding partner for Baabu.
 
I've seen Beni for the first time today. He looks great and will look even better when the green paint from his crate has worn off!!

Baabu is still at Chester - he's reluctant to leave us despite the best efforts of the team.

Don't quote me on this, but I seem to recall hearing that he was held in the old rhino house with the others? Just flicked through a guidebook from the time and it just said Chester hold 3 of the 5 species (Black, white and Indian). I'm sure it mentioned more than it did on the future developments page (1988 guide), but there was just a picture and it talked about the new chimp house.

Again, this is just something I recall, but weren't Chester just keeping hold of this individual for another zoo and they had no intention of breeding from him at the time? If anybody can give any concrete facts, that would indeed be interesting :)
