As long as you compare the cat´s tail and also the green peafowl nearby, it MUST be a Leopard! I would like to believe in surviving Javan tigers, but I don´t think that it is possible on this Island anymore.

They should try to Keep their leopards,bantengs and, most of all, rhinos alive for the following Generations, seems like it is too late for the tiger...

Previously ‘extinct’ butterfly discovered at water treatment works near Bath

A butterfly species that was thought to be extinct in the Bath and Bristol areas has been discovered on the grounds of Wessex Water’s Tucking Mill treatment works.

Caterpillars of the rare Marsh Fritillary butterfly have been found in a flower-rich meadow near the works thanks to surveys by ecologists from the Wessex Water estates team.

Found mainly in open damp grassland, the Marsh Fritillary was once widespread but was spotted at fewer and fewer sites until it disappeared from the local landscape in 1993.

In 1997 there was an attempted re-introduction scheme for the butterfly at former colony site Folly Farm, an Avon Wildlife Trust reserve near Chew Valley Lake.

This sadly failed, and the last previous recorded sighting in the Bath and Bristol area was back in 2005 on Bathampton Down.

Patrick Hancock, assistant ecologist at Wessex Water, said: “Marsh Fritillary is a favourite for enthusiasts for breeding in captivity, and recent records for the species have often been attributed to ‘unofficial’ releases into the wild.

“Numbers of Marsh Fritillary butterflies fluctuate from year to year for reasons that are not fully understood, so it will be interesting to see how many of these caterpillars survive the winter to become adult butterflies.

“What will be certain though is that, next spring, Wessex Water ecologists and local naturalists alike will be eager for the chance to see the stunning adult butterfly on the wing.”

Marsh Fritillary caterpillars live communally in webs spun on or near their main food plant, Devil’s-bit Scabious. A recent survey of the Tucking Mill site recorded 18 larval webs.

Woman stunned after spotting bird believed extinct in UK in her garden

A WOMAN from Crudwell was left stunned when she discovered a bird which is believed to be extinct in the British wild wandering around her back garden.

There hasn’t been a confirmed sighting in the wild of a Lady Amherst’s pheasant since March 2015 but when Angela King looked out of her window one morning last week she found the extremely rare bird nonchalantly going about its business.

The colourful pheasant is native to southwestern China and northern Myanmar and is believed to have been introduced to Britain in the 19th Century when owners of stately homes brought them over as game.

Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire had the largest populations but the species eventually died out in the UK and feral populations are believed to be extinct.

Angela said: “When I saw it, I called for my husband to come and look too as I knew no one would believe what I'd seen.

"If the identification is correct then it should never have been alive to wander in to my garden.

“Someone else in Crudwell did say they had seen it the year before."

A spokesperson for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said that owners are not recorded and it is not a protected species.

Any sightings away from the Bucks/Bedfordshire area are thought to be escapees or illegal releases.

She doesn't seem to realise that Lady Amherst's were never feral in Wiltshire... Woburn Abbey was one stronghold(I have seen them there in the past) and an area called Brickhills in Bedfordshire was another known area where birders went to look for them, but as stated, they do seem to have disappeared totally now. Even the similarly introduced Golden pheasant in Thetford and Norfolk is much reduced from previously.
