'Extinct' flower found near Peak District walking route

A plant thought to be globally extinct has been rediscovered growing near a popular country walking route.

The leek-coloured hawkweed, which resembles a dandelion, was discovered in Derbyshire in 1898 but not confirmed as a new species until 1942.

It disappeared from the area in the 1950s and died out at its only other site in Staffordshire some years ago.

Now staff from Kew's Millennium Seed Bank have found two small populations near the Peak District's Monsal Trail.

Just 62 of the plants, which grow in rocky limestone habitats, have been indentified in a nature reserve.

Otway Cray rediscovered near Anglesea: Disappearing cray fights another day

THE COMEBACK Otway Cray has made its first public appearance in Anglesea in over 10 years.

The native crayfish was last seen in the Anglesea area in 2007 and its rediscovery has excited ecologists.

Ecology Australia aquatic ecologist Katie Stevenson said she believed the reason that no one had seen the cray in so long was probably down to no one looking for them.

“It’s always exciting to find a threatened species and be able to contribute information on poorly understood animals,” she said.

“Surveys have been done in that area during years between sightings, but they’re small little things and if you don’t look you’re not going to find them.”

The Otway Cray only grows to around 6cm long and is typically found between Warrnambool and Lorne, King Island and parts of northwest Tasmania. It is listed as an endangered species in Victoria.

“Climate change is always going to be a big threat to species like this, as well as devegetation,” Ms Stevenson said. “You’ve also got the threat of introduced predators such as Trout that make it hard for native animals like this.”

The discovery was thanks to a Barwon Water-led aquatic sampling program for the Anglesea Borefield. Just under 30 of the species were discovered by researchers during the program.

Ms Stevenson confirmed ecologists were in preliminary discussions with Barwon Water on how to best protect the native species in our local waterways.

Infrastructure services general manager Paul Northey said the find was a sign of good river health in the local area.

“It’s great to see these Otway’s Crays in our local area, it’s a sign that the river health is suitable to support a diverse range of aquatic ecology,” he said.

Locals are encouraged to keep any waterways on their properties fenced off and away from livestock.

“It’s important for people to show a greater interest in our native species the more we can do to protect them,” Ms Stevenson said.
