Newquay Zoo Newquay Zoo News

I think there are a pair and this years baby on show and the pair from RSCC are now back at Newquay off show

In one of the 'Monkey Row' cages near the entrance, where the Dianas etc are.;)

They've definitely gone up in the world (maybe not literally!) now that they're in Monkey Heights then. There are Dianas, squirrel monkeys and capuchins in Monkey Row. Which ones replaced the mangabeys?

Squirrel monkey's replaced the mangabey's which i think fit the enclosure far better as the larger species seemed a tiny bit cramped (not much but still a bit). I would like to see a redevelopment of this row so that either glass windows are incorporated to use the space taken up by the stand off barrier or (perferably) knock the three cages into two.

Very much so... those Newquay cages are really rather small for the larger Monkey species. I saw the previous old Sooty Mangabey pair in one and it did look small, and that was only two, not four Monkeys. I think I'd prefer to see the two Diana females placed elsewhere- particularly if they aren't going to get another male.

Seems very similiar to Durrell's "Jewels of the Forest!" Both names feature gems/jewels, both exhibits feature passerines/songbirds from Asia/South-East Asia.... Well atleast according to Durrell's guide!

Either way, the exhibit sounds cool, are the Red Panda Developments still going ahead?

I thought the red panda development were pretty much done when I visited them in August. They've basically added glass walls. When I went they had yet to add the cusimanse to the side enclosure or open the amphibian tunnel.

does anyone know where they are planning to have the new aviary?

Thanks for the information Foz, so hopefully, this exhibit will be complete now. I was also wondering where the planned new aviary would be...

The best guess i can come up with for the location for this new aviary is on the site of the old walk through Aviary.

I believe that is entirely accurate - not sure if they're on show yet though.

A male Philippine spotted deer has been born at the zoo, this is the 3rd birth at the zoo.

I popped into the zoo today, and there is nothing major to report..

The Philippine spotted deer fawn is doing well. Last years fawn is still there..

The African planes exhibit is quite water logged, and a lot of the animals were on the hard standing (zebra and the 1.0 Ostrich) I don't know whether that is because of the conditions in the paddock or the species are not mixing well?? There is only one Lechwe left I don't know if there evidential plan is to faze this species out?? and there is only 0.1? water buck..

There have been some alterations in the tropical house on the aviary upstairs on the right above the water fountain they have now netted off one end of it.. Properly 3' or 4' wide, I don't know if this is going to be a temporarily holding for the new birds for the gems of the Jungle exhibit (While this work is being done the Mouse deer and the toucans have been moved off show)..

I thinks that's every thing..

Do you know where they plan to put the Gems of the Jugnle exhibit. I think i have read that the african animals had all mixed relatively sucessfully, except for the ostrich who the black wildebeast refuse to tolerate.

I thought Newquay had only ever managed to acquire a single waterbuck, from Cricket St Thomas when it closed....I'm unsure why they haven't succeeded in obtaining any additional animals to form a small herd.

If the paddock gets waterlogged, surely waterbuck and lechwe would be suitable species, along with sitatunga?
