West Midland Safari and Leisure Park News 2012

This has established itself as one of the UK's finest collections of ungulates. Brow-antlered and Prince Alfred's Deer, Banteng, Cape Buffalo, White-bearded Gnu...there must be as many deer and bovid species here as at Whipsnade these days.

2. Did the Persian Fallow deer come from Edinburgh?

Maybe Edinburgh quarantined them, as they appear to have done with the WhiteLipped Deer for the Highland Park. I don't think any mention was made when they arrived there that the Persian Fallow were bound for another collection though. It would be interesting to have this confirmed.

I've now looked on ISIS- West Mids are listed as having 4.4. Edinburgh are not listed, which would make that presumption more likely?

I certainly feel a visit coming on, particularly since the addition of the Persian Fallow, a species I've only seen once before, in Germany circa late 60's, while that big herd of Blackbuck at West Mids is a fine sight also. I can forgive a lot of the tackiness and 'White' animals for this burgeoning ungulate collection!:)

4.3 arrived at Edinburgh in 2011 from Stuttgart, so unless another female has arrived then it's probably from Edinburgh. I do think that is the case.

Indicating one has been born since they arrived possibly(?) though ISIS doesn't list a birth, just says '4.4'

I'm kind of sad that the wolves have gone as they made a very interesting display.
Anyone know where they have gone?

Wolves that have been replaced by dholes though... All the better in my book! :p
To be honest I think they were down to low numbers, last time I was there we only saw 2 on 2 trips round, so they may be no more. Just speculation on my part though.
Out of interest, is this the only drive-through dhole enclosure in the world? If not then I can't imagine there's many.

@ IanRRobinson Just for the record West Mids do not have Burmese Brow-antlered Deer or White-bearded Gnu.Seeing as Woburn have just had a group of White-beared Gnu' arrive I think we can say where they have come from now!

@Orangeperson yes did see the South African Elephants they are large grey things with big ears couldn't miss them:pOn a serious note I know why you asked but cannot say I saw anything wrong with them in any way.

@ Pertinax have just checked my pictures of the group of Persian Fallow Deer and can confirm that they did have 8 animals at West Mids.

The WMSP wildebeest/gnu are/were Black-bearded, taurinus rather than albojubatus. Are there no Connochaetes at all now?

Don't Woburn only have five or six? I went to West Mids in 2007 and they had a herd of about 15-20. Have all of them gone to Woburn?

I was guessing they have gone to Woburn, and YES they have all gone and also 2007 is along time ago so things can change alot in that time!!

Well good, I've obviously spent too long looking at Asian ones!

I'll do my best but as you know ISIS isn't always correct. ;)

Blue Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus taurinus)

6.0 at Longleat
0.7 at Port Lympne
0.6 at Woburn

Newest holders are Woburn. Best breeding record is believed to be Port Lympne.

Brindled Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) [Group)

Eastern White bearded Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus albojubatus)

1.0 at Knowsley

Black Wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou)

1.2 at Newquay
1.1 at Trotters

Newquay has the best breeding record:

2011 0.1
2010 1.0
2009 0.0.1

Marwell bred one calf a female in 2009. She and the 2010 calf from Newquay have formed the Trotter pair.

Well if its not true both myself and Bongorod saw the same thing, but then we were also told by a member of staff that, the day we visited was the first time that the Dholes had been let out into any part of the reserve,I would guess they will make an annoucement in the next few days so people can visit to see them over Easter. As for ISIS i tend not to believe that any more as many collections don't update it now they have moved to zims,I will say that they are on zootierlist and I would believe that more than ISIS!!!
