I was surprised last yaer , when there was all the fuss about Shambo the bull with TB , that I saw no mention that they had kept an elephant there for many years .

So was I. I never saw or heard a single mention of it....

I braved the zoo today:
There is a new anoa. The original one was in one of the tapir enclosures and the new one in the anoa enclosure. It looks smaller and younger than the original one (whose sex I've forgotten).
The brown spider monkeys both look like males to me.
Orangutans Gambira was being groomed by both Demo and Mali - a step in the right direction.
The Swamp Monkeys were high up in the willow tree on their island. It only looked like a small leap to the surrounding trees.

You certainly have to be made of strong stuff! The only bearable option is to go late and fight your way in past the leaving crowds. Or pray for a hot day and then they'll go to the beach instead :)

To veer slightly off-topic with a question.....we were discussing King colobus in relation to Paignton. Does anyone know when the breeding group of this species were given up by Jersey zoo? If so, why, and would any of the remainding animals have ended up at Paignton/blackpool/marwell/newquay? thanks...

King Colobus in UK.

It would be interesting to know how the various King Colobus groups in the Uk are linked, if at all. I don't know if any of the Jersey ones came to mainland Uk- Marwell have traded one or two other species with them in the past so that is one possibility- they appeared at Marwell when the new Giraffe house was built, I don't think they had them previously. Paignton seem to have had this species a very long time though.

I've visited Jersey about 6 times but I can't remember when the King Colobus disappeared from there- mid 1980's? I agree it would be good to know what happened to them.

I have some vague memory of the former colobus house becoming the aye-aye enclosure....is this true? That would mean the group left around 1990 at the latest. London had this species until the late 1980's as well. Marwell as you say never kept them until the new giraffe house was built, Blackpool didn't have them until maybe the mid-nineties or later....at that point there was still a pair at Cricket St. Thomas I think, and of course the groups at Paignton and Newquay.

The Jersey ones were certainly in the vicinity of the Aye Aye houise- probably the same indoor enclosure. They had an outdoor enclosure attatched to the 'archway' too.

I don't remember this species at ZSL- there was a period when I didn't visit for some years from mid 1980's- they weren't at London before 1984 though. Again, London and Jersey had/have good links over the years so could these have been the Jersey animals?

I am pretty sure London only had 1.1, they made have bred once in either 85 or 86, but by 1990 they were gone from the collection. I think Jersey had colobus long before that, and they were a breeding group. It would look like any remaining Jersey animals went to other zoos in 1988-90. Without an IZN to hand I can't be sure of the exact years, though.

Jersey had their Colobus from the earliest days, I think. Weren't they collected by Durrell?

At the same time Jersey also had species like Mandrill and Gelada Baboon(the latter small group ended up in the ZSL Sobell Pavilions before they died out.)

The current Marwell Colobus monkeys came from Paignton (male) and Frankfurt (1 female). I am not sure where the other female came from

Thats interesting. Do you know what happened to the 1.3 Hamlyn's Owl faced Monkeys that were also in the Giraffe House (monkey) enclosure and were replaced by the Diana Monkeys? They were not there very long...

Paignton news: I visited briefly today just to see my favourite residents. I didn't see the orangutans as there was a notice on the show den window saying that they had been naughty and had damaged the house so could be seen outside (they couldn't, actually). It seems Chinta had been merrily chipping away at the wall and had pulled out some breeze blocks. I love it! The ingenuity of orangutans! Last week I noticed that she and Demo had pulled some tiles off the bottom of a wall and were banging them on surfaces. Gigit used to bring in sticks from outside to pull the sealant away from the edges of the windows. DIY enrichment.:)
No sign of a Diana monkey baby.

They didn't have the colobus in 1996, which was the first time I visited. I was a little surprised not to see them, and I have a nagging thought that I had only just missed them (Reason was that I had never seen King colobus, having worked with Easterns). I cannot remember the layout of the Manor, but I didn't think the enclosure was where the aye-ayes were, but further round the back. I could be wrong, but again I seem to think there were some obvious remains of an exhibit or two (metal work) next to a building that had been pulled down.

Jersey Colobus

There is an archway or entrance into the courtyard area where the Aye Aye house is. I seem to remember the Colobus outdoor cage was outside and attatched to this building, looking over the valley...

SWA - you mention 1.2 Marwell colobus. As there are now 2.3 (possibly with another infant this year?), are the other 1.1 presumabling marwell-born offspring?

Hi. Yes there are 1.1 offspring as well as the 1.2 adults. The young are a few years old

Sorry I don't know the answer to that - but they seemed to have left in 2002, so I will try and find the annual report for that year to see if they left or died

I would be very interested. I think they could have been brought in when the new zoo Director Miranda Stevenson arrived. I wondered if she then got them moved out again- or did they die there.. I know the 3 females came from USA, the male from Edinburgh (where m/s Stevenson was prior to Marwell)

Paignton's website has an item today about the Red River Hogs. Briefly, Pablo (m) and Pumba(f) have arrived from Chester. Pablo was born 1/9/01 in Salzburg and Pumba 2/5/00 in Duisberg. They've had several litters in Chester and Paignton's male, Rick, has gone there to form a breeding group with two of their daughters.
That explains why they look so well and lively together.
