Zoo La Boissière du Doré News from La Boissiere

Two female gepards are on the way to La Boissiere from Slaskie Zoo (Chorzów / Katowice).
They are sisters: Mia and Malaika. Born 3.10.2019 in our Zoo. Mother Mambo.

Last may 27th the malayan tapir pair has her first offspring since they arrived at the zoo. The baby was a male called Mimpi. The young has respiratory problems after four weeks and unfortunately he never recovered :(

I didn't know their names, thank you ! And that's even more wonderful news because their mother Mambo was born at la Boissière du Doré herself :D

A baby red panda was born on june 10, from father Xin and first time mother Zhanshi, arrived last year

Other births at the zoo, some I've seen myself in july, but no official news yet

ps. Mia and Malaika where all ready to go to Moscow ZOO in February before the war started. So it turned out pretty special.

Could you tell me who is who between Mia and Malaika ? I noticed one of them have some visible white in the right eye. Of course I have pictures ;) From last month. I'll go again a the end of the month. I hope to see the lion cubs.

I don't remember. But I will try to find out.
The only pic that have in my library is the sign with their birthday (part in english).

Someone told me their is a sign at the exhibit, so, this birth is official now ^^

This is the fifth viable birth of a margay at la Boissière du Doré
 
I went last weekend
All babies born this summer Can nos be seen.
The 3 lion cubs (2 males and 1 female), the margay kitten, 2 serval kittens (2 females, born 21/06/2022), a female red panda named Tashi (born 10/06/2022) and a two-toed sloth
More babies are on the way. An important one IS due for octobre/november

Nop, it will be just for the tigers and comes after the 2 hectares lions enclosure and 2,2 hectares brown bears exhibit and will be follow in two or three years by a 1,5 or 2 hectares new wolves enclosure.
The main goal for the owner is to offer large space for the animals. It will permit to redone some old part of the zoo such as the past asiatic lions, tigers and bears enclosures which will be merged to create a new amur leopard (new species) breeding facility.
An to be fair, the zoo has large enclosures for other animals than carnivores such as the two large african plains and the gelada baboons island.

The zoo's director had this in mind since years, he talked to me about it more than 3 years ago (at that time he hoped to have Amur leopard, he succeeded they'll arrive in 2024-2025)
The project is to give more space to species already here, and to empty the oldest part of the park, wich have the smallest exhibits, to redone it.
It began a few years ago. No new exhibit for an entirely new species was made since 2018. Instead were built new much bigger enclosures for black leopards, servals, lions (new subspecies but the zoo already had lions), bears and now tigers. Next step the wolves, then the Amur leopards can arrive.

I recall some discussion going on on "can a zoo exhibit be too big" ? I think we are reaching this point. It might seem counter-intuitive but from an animal welfare point, I think it is a bad decision. Of course the 2 zoo tigers owill have a huge space but it means also denying all the others that live in cramped enclosures in other zoos the right to have a decent enclosure. The additional space given to those 2 tigers would have provided much more increase in animal welfare (and better options for population management as well) if it would have been divided and dedicated to 5 or 6 animals.
But French zoos seem to lean towards a battle of figures on who will give the most space to their animals (space being widely thought as animal welfare which is far more complicated).
 
New video of the building works for the sumatran tigers. It shows the work done for the new path between the bears exhibit and the new tigers exhibit.
