Tiergarten Nürnberg News from Nurnberg

Europes oldest Red river hog has died at of more then 18 years.
Heidi was born on July 5 2002 at Salzburg ( Austria ) and came 2005 to Nürnberg.
On Jan. 4 2021 it was decided to put her asleep because of age-problems.

In Frankfurt, one animal lived for 22 years.

Fortunately, the poor sow in Nuremberg is now dead, after being kept alone for years, because in Nuremberg they apparently do not know that pigs are very social animals that never live alone in freedom, but in large groups. Apparently, Nuremberg was too incapable of giving the animal at least one domestic pig for company, because there was no specific reason to keep the Red-River-Hog alone.

Recently a 2-year old male Sulawesi babirusa (Babyrousa celebensis) arrived from Zoo Wuppertal, he will soon be accompanied by a female. He can be found in the tropical house/Tropenhaus which used to house babirusa till 1990. The enclosure consists of
two outdoor enclosures with a combined size of over 1,000 square meters, created from the former enclosures of the red river hogs and the lowland tapirs. The indoor enclosure is around 70 square meters in size with five boxes and a show area. Furthermore they will have access to both bathing and mud pools.

At the beginning of June female Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus) Pinola (*2012) has been send to Lyon zoo. Nürnberg now doesn't have any Malayan tapir anymore but is expecting the arrival of a new breeding pair this summer. The tapirhaus will be home to Southeast Asian species like Malayan tapirs, Sulawesi babirusa and endangered bird/reptile and fish species.

On the 15th of August male Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) Subali was euthanized due to age related problems, he was 15 years old.

For the first time a European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) hatched at the zoo at the beginning of this month. The zoo also released 5 European pond turtles in the Hessian Nidda floodplains near Stockheim.

After 5 years a male and a female Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) were born on the 30th of Augusts.

This year the zoo received a female Yellow-backed duiker (Cephalophus silvicultor), she was born in Little Rock Zoo (USA) in 2017. Tiergarten Nürnberg now has 1.1 Yellow-backed duikers.

According to ZTL Tiergarten Nürnberg keeps both the Northern Lynx (Lynx lynx lynx) and the Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx). According to the zoos instagram a new male named Yuri arrived from zoo Magdeburg. However Magdeburg (according to ZTL) only has Carpathian lynx (Lynx lynx carpathicus). Supposedly this new male will live together with the 3,5-year old female Sansa, which I believe is a Northern Lynx.
So does Tiergarten Nürnberg now have 3 different (sub)species of lynx?

Nuremberg only keeps Carpathian lynx, the animals received from Czechia in recent years (listed as no ssp.) are also Carpathian lynx and the original nominate animals haven't been in the zoo since 2018.

Thank you for answering my question!

Yes she kinda is, because the small Bavarian Tiergarten Straubing is renovating their lion enclosure Nürnberg takes care of there lions until end of the year. So I think she will be alone until then
Ok, thanks:). Out of curiosity does anyone know how old she is? She looks quite young that's why I was surprised when I thought she was on her own.

Recently multiple animals were born at the zoo!
In the last couple of weeks 1 Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer), 1 Przewalski's horse (Equus ferus przewalskii), 1 Addax (Addax nasomaculatus) and multiple were Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia) born.
