Tiergarten Schönbrunn News from Schonbrunn

Had an amazing day today at this zoo, it's incredible that it's survived this long and still holds up with many beautiful enclosures especially the hippos and polar bears which you can get so close to! Even though I thought the polar bear enclosures were pretty good, the bears themselves did show quite a lot of stereotypical behaviour like pacing which is a shame, all the other animals appeared content. There's also so many signs about the history of certain buildings which I find fascinating to read and it's very informative to see that kind of thing, what you'd expect in the world's oldest zoo of course though there's no guide book which I find a bit surprising. Overall a very good visit and would definitely go again when I next have a chance.

Nothing yet, the current occupants of the site of the future elephant enclosure (the federal forest office) first have to leave and that won't happen before next year it seems. So it will take some time.

In the meantime the current director has a lot of trouble with the Austrian media from naming animals to owning weapons. The aquarium as envisaged by the previous director probably won't happen, but a new aquarium will be constructed on the current site by a Hagenbeck design company (no guesses to the last name of Vienna's current director....).

Some good news for us is that the current insect house will be remodelled into something reminiscent of an airport. Here, part of the confiscated reptiles and amphibians the zoos takes care for will find a home. That includes some very rare species as far as zoos are concerned, so there will likely be some exciting stuff on show, as these animals have been of show until now.

Any news on the remodelling of the insect house? Any idea about the species that will be visible there (apart from the few that were mentioned before)?

According to this article (courtesy of @Jana who provided a link to it in the Prague news thread), Schönbrunn plans on acquiring Chinese Pangolin next year, the female being Šiška from Prague (born at the zoo in early 2023) and the male arriving from an unspecified zoo most likely in Asia (and more likely Taipei). This move was recommended by the international breeding coordinator.

The source also states that Schönbrunn have already began construction of the soon-to-be pangolin enclosure, but due to Šiška's young age, she will remain in Prague for at least another year. Indeed, it is also mentioned that they are yet to even have her eating solid food, and the process of introducing her to that ahead of the Vienna move begins now. This of course means that there is a chance that the male will arrive even sooner than that, although that is quite unlikely as there is as of yet not even a plan as to where the male will come from.

The thar & golden takin exhibit is almost finished:

No such thing can be said of the new terrarium which will be in the old insect house. I could peak inside but if it opens before May 2025, I would be very surprised, no sign of terraria yet.

Vienna's rarest birds are actually basically on display. The long-tailed broadbills can be seen in part of what used to be the coati indoor enclosure adjacent to the rainforest house. This means from the high polar bear viewpoint. We saw 2 birds easily with a bit of patience

Another bird that made a surprise appearance was the blue-winged pitta in the rainforest part of the bird house (which otherwise only has neotropical birds). This part of the bird house was still full of rare birds, the African part was a disappointment with only mousebirds and white-eyes visible, even when plenty of other birds were still signed...

All in all a lovely visit again to one of my favourite zoos.

The zoo has given further details about the aquarium which is planned to be open in 2028. During the construction the animals will be transferred to the aquatic research station at Maxingstraße.

The reptiles will be placed in the desert house, the rainforest building, or the new conservation building. Very few species will be given away.

The zoo also has a separate website for the aquarium ( www.artenschutzaquarium.at )
