Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden News From the Cincinnati Zoo 2011 #2

I'm not convinced about the animal in the picture being a Persian Leopard. Persian leopards tend to be paler, with smaller more clustered rosettes on the flanks with, fading out and becoming more sparse near the belly. The animal in the picture is darker yellow, with large rosettes spread uniformly, more like jaguar.

Of course, I don't know when/if the Cincinnati Zoo had jaguars. Also, not all Persian leopards look alike, so it could just be variant pattern I'm not used to seeing.

Cinzoo man - Oh, that's good to hear. The way you put it made me think that the crane had moved. The crane looks much better in the lush flamingo exhibit. It's striking against the greenery.

Cinzoo man & Reedstilt - The cat in the picture is most certainly a Jaguar. I was just stating that I remembered seeing the Persian Leopards, but I don't have clear memories of the Jaguars. Besides what Reedstilt said, Jaguars have a rather unique, stocky build with a shorter tail. You can also clearly see the black spots within the rosettes that is only found in Jaguars. As well, the Persian Leopards were in a rocky desert themed enclosure!

I didn't even notice the spots within the rosettes until you mentioned it. Would have saved me a lot of trouble. I thought the tail looked rather short for a leopard too, but I wasn't sure if it was just curling away from the camera or not.

Anyhow, it's a good picture regardless. I need to find a zoo nearby with a jaguar. I don't recall ever seeing one myself. Cleveland wouldn't happen to have one, would it?

Reedstilt- The Cleveland Zoo does not have any Jaguars.

The zoo has recently uploaded more videos on Youtube.

Went to the zoo today for the first time in about a week (last week I went to the place in Troy instead and got to pet a giraffe, elephant, emu, kangaroo, etc... neat place!) and they had a few people out with animals. I got the opportunity to pet and learn about a screaming hairy armadillo named Axel and there was a girl with a hornbill. So it looks like they're finally bringing out the animals. :D

There was also a HUGE display in the gift shop dedicated to little Zuri. They had t-shirts, mugs and lots of other memorabilia. It was sad, but sweet.

i noticed people are bringing out the animals too, i went on Wed. and i saw a screaming hairy armidillo and 4 species of snakes, more than ive seen ever.

It's nice to hear that the docent program has picked back up and the animals are out-and-about again :)

If you look at the page before this, I already posted that video ;)

The Bonobo troop at the Cincinnati Zoo is quite large and so is the behind the scenes area. They are likely only outside for a limited amount of time each day, and you have likely just missed them.

The Three Pallas' cat kittens are expected to go on display at the Night Hunters exhibit next month. The knowledge gained in producing the pallas kittens will be applied to a clouded leopard reproduction program in the fall, Oehler said.

The Female Aye-Aye is a 6-year-old female obtained from the Duke Lemur Center at Duke University. The zoo plans to get a male aye-aye in the fall, and begin breeding.

The baby tayra and its mother are off-exhibit, but will likely move into the Night Hunters exhibit in August.

Thanks for sharing the article :) I'm very excited that the zoo has decided to get into breeding Aye-ayes. Hopefully everything will work out and we will soon hear the pitter-patter of little Aye-ayes! I have my fingers crossed that these AI techniques will work with the Clouded Leopards, as the zoo has been trying to breed them for so long!

Did anyone else know that there was a potto in the aye-aye exhibit?

the White tiger was still in the Malayan tiger exhibit

Kudu i posted the pic of the empty Wildlife Canyon exhibit

It doesn't suprise me that they put a Potto in the Aye-aye enclosure. They have so many of them that they tend to stick them wherever they can!

Hm... I wonder what's going on... Someone asked about the Malayan Tigers on the zoo's Facebook page, but they haven't responded.

It hasn't even been open two months yet and it's being upgraded? What exactly are they doing or could you not tell?

That's really quite strange. It'll be interesting to see what they do, if it's even noticeable to the visitors at all.

im glad they are renovating it, i bet that they got too many complaints about not being able to see the bats.

Forgot to mention that Wildlife Canyon was closed.

That's one of the main complaints I've heard. The exhibit is just so large and dark that it's hard to see such small creatures. I mean the zoo's exhibit for their Common Vampire Bats is the largest one I've ever seen for the species. I know that the zoo is interested in enlarging the size of their group, so hopefully the combination of a larger group and whatever renovation they doing now will cause the bats to be visable more often.

That's interesting as well. All kinds of closures and renovations going around the zoo now days. Perhaps this means that something has moved or is moving into the old Emu yard ?

i was thinking the exact same thing!
