Just found a new article about the park that mentions that the new entrance aviary is indeed finished. It's this aviary that is called the 'Reich der Mitte/Middle Kingdom' and will feature characteristic bird species from China, providing visitors with the opportunity to experience them without barriers. Additionally, other news includes nocturnal animals such as bats, straw-colored fruit bats, gliders, and galagos.

Another article was published yesterday in Walsrode Zeitung, which mentions both these new attractions and also includes a photo of the newly finished aviary.

The article also mentions that the new "Nachtwelten" actually replaces the hummingbird house. However, it's not clear where the hummingbirds will be housed now or if they will even be on show anymore.

Tomorrow it's time for my first visit of the year, so expect another update tomorrow!

Wishing to see what you are going to tell us!!

Enjoy the visit and give us full of shoots

I had a fantastic day at the park today! There have been noticeable changes throughout, some minor and others more significant.

Firstly, the park has introduced a new approach, focusing on continents, regions, and countries. It's now divided into distinct areas such as Australia, South America, etc., each housing animals indigenous to those regions. For example, the parrot house exclusively hosts species from South and Central America, while the new entrance aviary (along with 1 additional nearby aviary) is dedicated solely to species from China.

Here are some regional-themed areas or aviaries I noticed:

China:
• The new entrance aviary, named "Reich der Mitte," along with one additional nearby aviary, exclusively feature species from China.

Europe:
• The old European area still predominantly houses European species. For instance, the saddleback stork has been replaced with common cranes.

South and Central America:
• Parrot house, other than parrots you can also see other species of birds here now! What they all have in common (including the parrots) is that they all come from South and Central America!

South East Asia:
• Jungle Trail - This area now seem to exclusively feature species from South East Asia, with some exceptions for free-ranging birds. Hornbills are now among the free-flying species!

Africa:
• Fasanerie - Several consecutive aviaries now house various African species together, including species from Madagascar.
• Paradieshalle (Free-flight hall) - It seems they are aiming to transform this free-flight hall into a space primarily inhabited by African species, given that most of the current residents are indeed from Africa. In here they now have two species of African hornbills free-flying!
• "Sittichanlage" - Half of the aviaries between the parrot house and "Blick hinter die Kulissen" houses African species!

Australia:
• The Kiwi house and surrounding aviaries now predominantly house species native to Australia, including lorikeets and lories.
• "Sittichanlage" - Half of the aviaries between the parrot house and "Blick hinter die Kulissen" houses Australian species!

On top of this, all the aviaries in the paradieshalle now are labeled with a region, country, or continent and house birds from these places.
Here is a complete list of the aviaries in the paradieshalle:

- West-Afrika (West Africa)
- Archipel der Philippinen (Archipelago of the Philippines)

Other areas seem to still mix species randomly, for example in Pukara, "Blick hinter die Kulissen" and the freiflughalle.

Nachtwelten
Nachtwelten is one of their "selling" points this year, and is a house for nocturnal animals. This is not a new building, but its replacing the hummingbirds in the hummingbird house! Three species of hummingbirds now instead can be seen in Pukara.

In Nachtwelten you can see the following species:
- Pallas's long-tongued bat (Glossophaga soricina)
- Pale spear-nosed bat (Phyllostomus discolor)
- Sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps)
- Common tree frog (Polypedates leucomystax)
- Kuhl's flying gecko (Gekko kuhli)
- Straw-colored fruit bat (Eidolon helvum)
- Mohol bushbaby (Galago moholi)

- White-backed magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen hypoleuca)

And more I can't think of right now!

I am visiting the park again on Sunday :)

Black-winged myna (Acridotheres melanopterus melanopterus)

They have Black Winged Mynas???? I'd go just for them. I don't know anywhere else except for the Cikananga Foundation in Indonesia where they're kept, and Cikananga isn't open to the public! I live in the UK, so have never been, but I really hope to some day soon. Keep the news coming @Daniel Sörensen

Also, do they have any Madagascan species other than the Vasas? I'm aware that they used to have Crested + Blue Couas but don't know if they're still around.

Oh and where abouts could I found an up-to-date full species list for WVP Walsrode? I'd like to plan a week-long trip accordingly.

What species are actually in included in the new " Reich der Mitte "?
It was not fully stocked yet during my recent visit. But the plan is to keep Temminck's tragopan, Golden pheasant, Lady Amherst's pheasant, Mandarin duck, Baikal teal, Black-breasted thrush, Red-whiskered bulbul, Collared partridge, Grey-capped emerald dove, Eastern spotted dove, White-crested laughingthrush.

But during my latest visit, only the pheasants and ducks were kept in there as they still need to fix some small holes before letting the other birds in.

Yes, four black-winged mynas can be seen right now in the Paradieshalle, very easy to spot and photograph! :)

They still have several different Madagascan species. Some of them include the Madagascar partridge, Madagascar blue pigeon, Western Madagascar crested ibis, Malagasy turtle dove, Blue coua, Giant coua, Crested coua, Red fody, Malagasy pond heron, and Malagasy sacred ibis. I might have forgotten something though! All these are on show right now.

As far as I know, there isn't an up-to-date list of the species currently on show. I've been asked to create one, but it's challenging to maintain as the birds are frequently moved around, with new species being put on show and others taken behind the scenes. The best resource available is Zootierliste, which is usually pretty up-to-date. Most of the species reported as seen (gesehen) last year are still on show this year, but not all of them.

I often help people in private messages with text and photo guides to help them see exactly what they want to see in the park during their visit - it can be a challenge otherwise as many species are not even signed etc.

Sorry to bombard you with questions @Daniel Sörensen!

Is the cuckoo-roller still on-show at Walsrode? I've been looking through your stunning pics on Flickr and came across it.

Also, on a related note, what camera/lens do you use? I have a little Panasonic Lumix with a max 2-metre zoom, and (as is the case with lots of zoos) the barring effect of mesh or wire often gets in the way of my images? I am hoping to upgrade to a bigger lens before I go to WVP Walsrode, but wondered if a 2-metre zoom would be enough, especially if there is a barrier/fence before the aviaries themselves so people don't get too close. It is very annoying for me as I really love up-close/portrait shots of birds, but I often can't get them due to this.

Also, do you post your pics much anymore? A lot of the stuff on Flickr is from a couple of years back, and you haven't posted much on Instagram in a while.

Thanks for any help you could provide, and I'll try not to quiz you so much!

Pilsen has some on show in Asian garden currently. But no idea if it´s the same subspecies like Walsrode...
Is the Asian garden the Sichuan house? I'd love to visit there too, the Scaly Laughingthrushes, Brazilian Mergansers, and the other beautiful birds are very appealing to me, not least the Black Winged Mynas!

The Cuckoo-Roller died several years ago now.

No - the Sichuan House is at Prague, as are the Mergansers of which you spoke, whilst Jana was discussing Plzen.

Visited today and spotted two new species: Meller's duck (Anas melleri) and Madagascar teal (Anas bernieri). Both are kept in the paradieshalle.
I also observed that Golden parakeet (Guaruba guarouba) has returned on show after being kept for several years of show.

Additionally, two other new species not currently on show are the Mongolian ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus mongolicus) and the Dark chanting goshawk (Melierax metabates).

Edit: Oh yeah, and the harpy is now back on show again (She had not been on show this year yet until now).
