Niabi Zoo Niabi Zoo News

Niabi Zoo is a place that I visited in 2012 and the facility is certainly better than a few AZA zoos that I've been to over the years. The elephants are long gone, but it sounds as if there are other issues at this zoo. It's a real shame that AZA-accreditation has not been accomplished, and one highlight is the impressive Colobus Monkey exhibit.

I just visited Niabi Zoo in August and this decision is surprising to me as nothing really stood out as awful and in need of replacement to me. Yeah the chainlink is bad and the aviaries/cages around the building near the giraffes are terrible to look at, see into, abd small for some animals, but exhibits overall were off an average quality in my mind. Whats there is definitely not worse than some other AZA zoos that are currently accredited. Zoos that I've visited that I'd say are in a worse state are Chahinkapa, Bramble Park (also up for accredidation here in September, but I can't find anything on their decision, anyone else know more?), and Potowatomi. That being said, I don't think Niabi is really that far behind the other small zoos nearby in central Illinois. Other than Peoria outstripping it because of Africa!, Scovill and Miller Park aren't really all that different in terms of quality. Alas, it sounds like this decision has more to do with things going on behind the scenes instead of with animal care.

That being said, probably the worst zoo I've ever been to is also in the same area as these small zoos and is god awful. That would be Brown's Oakridge Zoo.

Southern White Rhinos Arriving 2021:

Niabi Zoo announces Southern White Rhinos fundraising campaign

The Niabi Zoo is kicking off its fundraising campaign to bring a new and exciting animal species to the Niabi Zoo and the Quad Cities community. White Rhinos.

“This will be the first time that this or any rhinoceros’ species will have been kept at Niabi, and we are beyond excited to be able to share these magnificent animals with our community. We hope to have the animals here by early summer of 2021, but there is still much to do in order to get ready."

The rhinos new home will be in the existing Bactrian camel area. The camels will be moved to a new area of the zoo.
