Niabi Zoo Niabi Zoo News

Works fine for me.
Slightly off-topic (more a general comment too): @Chlidonias, I assume this is all still to do with the unresolved issues that the US regulators and net administrators have with European privacy restrictions and regulations and that quite a few US news sites have not quite done anything to make it any easier for us European viewers.

On topic: I do welcome the introduction of rhinos at the zoo, however I would have held out better with black or greater one-horned rhino. This is also the policy line for AZA vis a vis the more solitary species in city zoos and open range zoos to go with white rhino (BTW: Niabi was never on the list to receive these .. rhino). It would seem reasonable to expect them to start keeping a bachelor herd of males in future. I admit having rhinos at this small zoo does make it a more attractive venue for general zoo visitor.

The Niabi Zoo in Coal Valley has a relatively small footprint and is more or less in valley forested area. I wonder if they have any room to expand? There seems to be a good deal of arable land. Not sure though if there are any restrictions on the forested areas and regulations or nature reserved areas overall.

I do think too many zoos want to have a corresponding African savannah (which does threaten overall to have ever more self replicating exhibits of the same species without any deemed "unsafe" species in PR/marketing/media quarters which would actually enhance the total exhibit and make it more idiosyncratic / interesting as an visitor experience vis a vis other zoos one might want to visit. Eventually, then the whole concept becomes archetype and a total bore - so no repeat visits).

Three Fennec fox kits have been born:

Niabi Zoo announces birth of three Fennec foxes

The three kits were born on February 4 to 4-year-old male Jelani and 10-year-old female Pika, both of whom were successful parents just a year ago.

The new foxes, who are all boys, are an important addition to the breeding population in North America according to zoo officials. They are managed “through a corporative population management plan, currently made up of only 137 individuals.”

Niabi’s first ever rhino has arrived - 1.0 Southern White Rhino Kito who will be joined by a female in 2022: Niabi Zoo welcomes first-ever rhino, Keto
I would be interested to know where the rhino bull Keto was sourced from?
BTW: Niabi Zoo - Coal Valley is a member in ZAA.

There is a possibility - allthough slim - that Keto is the Kito from Fresno's Chaffee Zoo born 2 years ago. But that is just speculation ...

I know Zoofari Parks (VA Safari and Gulf Breeze) had been looking for new holders and are very involved with the ZAA
VA Safari does have a few surplus male white rhino and one captive-born female (coming up to 6 years of age). Gulf Breeze has just had a male calf born and a 2-year old home-bred female. On top, probably Rum Creek might have female white rhino available as well (however given their close cooperation with AZA programs, that might be a little more difficult.

Were not some independent smaller zoos looking to import from South Africa?

The female Amur Leopard from Thrigby, UK is IONA born 15 October 2017 (her mother is KOREA from Prague and her father is SKODJE from Berlin TP via Edinburgh). IONA left Thrigby on 1 June and arrived safely in Coal Valley on 2 June.

Niabi Zoo have announced the discovery of a threatened wild population of Rusty-patched Bumble Bees (Bombus affinis) living on the zoo's grounds. IUCN lists this species as critically endangered and decreasing. The zoo have established several prairie flower beds throughout the past couple of years to support the bumblebees.
