North American Asian Elephant Population 2021

I'm also very interested in seeing a credible source for this possible move. Even the girls might not bring over novel genes just consider the imports (bulls) thus far. Ongard and Billy (Denver) in particular. These potential pairings could do a lot for the US collection.
Billy is the same issue, his sire is Alexander. So he's related to Trong Nhi and Lih Nhi, plus Lilly, Phobe, and all their kids.

Ongard, at least, is a genuinely valuable addition, being a founder to the region!

The original press release from White Oak stated that Mysore and a few other elderly animals would remain in Polk County.
This should interest all: In Dan Koehl's usually well informed forum Mysore is now listed as having passed away during May 2021. Cannot find any report confirming this on his site though, but also no reason to doubt it would be incorrect.

I wonder what the AZA will say about this situation. Even when paired individually with Happy in the past, both Maxine and Patty attacked her. It may be a given that they will now be sent elsewhere, but quite a few of us had hoped from some priority statementssa few years ago that the Bronx Zoo was not done with elephants yet. Between their expertise with breeding very difficult species and the vastness of the campus to allow for an ample elephant exhibit, they could be an invaluable breeding facility. Director Breheny has said that they will never again exhibit elephants not in a matriarchal herd, so it would either be a new exhibit and program or no elephants at all. With WCS's unparalleled resources, this could be a real lost opportunity.

I am also hoping they will keep on with elephants in a multi-generational herd as well. By the looks of it, they definitely have the facilities for it, but not as many stalls in the current elephant barn but they could renovate that into one of the indoor enclosures like in UK with a bull enclosure easily. It is a multi-species barn.

Would even a bachelor herd be off the table?

No not at all. They had the bulls, Hank and Groucho in the past and a calf. A bachelor herd might work because the public does not see the elephants except off the tram. If they want to keep the three stalls and not renovate, a bachelor herd would be ideal.

We will see what happens when one of the cows pass away and they decide about the last one. That I do know.

I’m sorry I keep repeating this but the current Bronx barn is insufficient for keeping new elephants. Its nearly 40 years old and only about 3,500 sq feet. Its dark and has no larger stall area. Some people on here continually act like it would be fine to hold bachelor Asian elephants. And maybe some less significant zoo would do this but the Bronx Zoo would not given there focus on welfare. I know some of y’all want elephants in NY but if that happens it will be either from a brand new exhibit on a new location or a fairly expensive renovation of all of the existing holding space with a new barn likely. It would cannibalize significant parts of the off-exhibit area in Wild Asia as well.

As well the leader of the zoo has said we will never keep elephants like this again. And the zoo has repeated that for more than a decade, in various interviews especially regarding the lawsuits over Happy.

A retrofit in terms of adding skylights, sand floors and the like could very well work in the zoo's favor, and maybe an expansion would be needed based on your account of the barn. I have no knowledge of the barn itself, but the YARD is fine for a bachelor group of elephants.

Its far smaller than any barn I know of especially given NY’s climate. Like its about 1/3 of Rosamond Gifford zoos size for a New York comparison. Its largely concrete floored and is almost 45 years old. The building is probably past the time in its lifespan to renovate and the monorail is nearing functional extinction in the next 10-20 years sadly. Not the zoo’s doing on the later more just the issues with monorail upkeep and safety that have led to many theme parks and zoos phasing it out.

But again I go back to the zoos statements on the issue, its not just my opinion. If the lifespan of the monorail wasn’t a complicating factor maybe expanding the elephants with a new barn of say 8,000 sq ft and expanding their outdoor exhibit would be good. I do disagree that there outdoor exhibit is fine. Its barely sufficient but does not meet the Bronxs or really any premier zoos standard. I mean its pretty much .8 acres of compacted dirt at this point.

Would it be fair to say that most of the future breeding for the species within north America now rests with White Oak and the African lion Safari in Rockton?

New development! I now know who Winnies dad is. I'm not at liberty to disclose who, but sufficient to say, it's not someone who I was expecting...
Any idea when it will be announced?
One of her brothers?
It most definitely is not. The whole point of artificially inseminating Tupelo was to prevent inbreeding. If they wanted to breed her with one of her brothers, they wouldn't have gone through the expensive and not often successful process of artificial insemination. The SSP would also never recommend such a move.

Sneezy, Ongard, Spike, Rex, Bodhi, and Groucho are My Best guesses.

I have a feeling given the close proximity most of the zoos are to Houston they would of been who they were expecting. I’m sure the zoo will announce it soon, maybe as a fathers day announcement.

I don’t feel it would be fair to say this. Houston’s definitely got something going on as well as OKC. Not to mention yeah they haven’t had any successes as of recently but St. Louis does have several young cows who are already or coming of age. I’m also optimistic that If all goes well and NZP’s importation happens I feel it won’t be the last. Meaning other facilities with a breeding setup who’s cows are aging out could potentially follow suit. From my understanding European zoos are reaching capacity and will need to start making room. I hear the NZP move is a matter of dominance issues within a growing herd and no room to split the herd. I’m sure Rotterdam can’t be the only facility with that issue who would be willing to send out females.

I hope this is a mistake. I think it would be announced. In addition, elephant.se did not update the information about elephants for several months, so there may be a misunderstanding. It also happened about two years ago, when Miss Bets from Fresno was listed as dead, but she was still alive (unfortunately she really died soon after).

Well, the person who reported the news said it was not what he/she expected. So strange things have happened. It has happened in the past. In all honesty, I hope the sire represents fresh genes as Winnie is a female.

We will know the sire in time.

What would you suggest that they do? If I remember correctly, the elephant barn is actually a multi-species barn, sharing with at least the rhino(s). So they may not tear all that down, but they could renovate the space. They are already set up for protected contact.
