North American Asian Elephant Population 2021

Going back to Rosanna I saw the father of her 2 recent calves Jasmine and Thorn was Sampson. Wouldn’t that mean that Jasmine would have no genetic diversity to the Asian Elephant population in the US? Also if Rosanna is pregnant again currently would the father be Albert, their current bull?

Just became Jazmine’s dad is Samson doesn’t automatically make her not valuable. Yes, she isn’t as valuable as she would have been if her father was someone other than Samson or any of his relatives. However, she is still Rozanna’s only surviving daughter and Rozie is the only surviving daughter of two founders herself. So that would make Jazzy relatively valuable as her mom is very valuable while her dad is not at all. Rozie’s potential future calf’s sire could be Albert or another bull as for some reason 2 or maybe all 3 of her pregnancies so far have been via AI. That being said, if AI is attempted again I hope they choose to AI her with samples from another bull rather than Albert (or Samson) this time.

WATCH: OKC Zoo shares ultrasound video of baby elephant due in February 2022

Ashas pregnancy so far is still going smoothly. Due in 2 months!
That’s from over a year ago, they shared that video on Thanksgiving 2020. Oddly enough, OKC hasn’t provided any updates recently and haven’t even mentioned her being pregnant on their social medias. Hopefully the pregnancy is progressing well, there shouldn’t be anything to worry about though considering she’s a proven breeder. Also, there’s a pretty good chance she will give birth in January itself since she gave birth a month earlier than they expected when she was pregnant with both Malee and Kai.

geez. I saw it on Facebook and the news organization that posted it which was WLWT said it was 2 days ago . Wow am I stupid lol

Not really news but thought it would be appropriate to post this here. I contacted Syracuse and asked about future breeding plans and received the following response. Obviously they didn't confirm a pregnancy or anything but they did confirm that Mali and Doc have mated and it sounds like they are still trying to breed Doc and Kirina. Funny that they say it takes a long time to confirm pregnancy though as we all know it only takes about 3 to 4 months to do so.

"Hello and thank you for reaching out. We too are hopeful for more elephant calves in our future. Regarding Kirina, she has exhibited some reproductive issues in recent years, but she still interacts with bull elephant Doc and we continue to monitor her cycle. Mali has a close relationship with Doc and we know they have mated, but Asian elephant gestation is incredibly long – up to 22 months – so it takes a long time to be able to confirm a pregnancy. We certainly are hoping for the best, and we appreciate your good wishes!"

I don't think they will want to announce the pregnancy in advance, they will announce the birth.

Why didn't Targa have any more calves? She is still of reproductive age.

They stopped breeding Indy with Targa and Romani due to the death of Keder who died in the first few months, and Romani having a stillborn in 2006
That doesn’t make sense, just because Kedar died doesn’t mean Targa and Indy could no longer breed. Kedar didn’t even die of EEHV so it’s not like they paused their breeding program because of it. Targa and Mali left the zoo for ALS shortly after anyway. I know Romani had some reproductive issues after her stillborn though. Targa has been recommended to breed with Doc since his arrival but she has never conceived oddly.

They responded to me

"Targa and Doc get along great and are frequently together. Fingers crossed!"

Hopefully she will become pregnant
I got the exact same response, word for word, this morning lol. I still doubt she’s going to get pregnant though, Doc and her have been together for nearly 10 years and nothing.

Well at least Mali can continue to breed, and her son Chuck will hopefully become a great breeding bull
