Not really news but thought it would be appropriate to post this here. I contacted Syracuse and asked about future breeding plans and received the following response. Obviously they didn't confirm a pregnancy or anything but they did confirm that Mali and Doc have mated and it sounds like they are still trying to breed Doc and Kirina. Funny that they say it takes a long time to confirm pregnancy though as we all know it only takes about 3 to 4 months to do so.
"Hello and thank you for reaching out. We too are hopeful for more elephant calves in our future. Regarding Kirina, she has exhibited some reproductive issues in recent years, but she still interacts with bull elephant Doc and we continue to monitor her cycle. Mali has a close relationship with Doc and we know they have mated, but Asian elephant gestation is incredibly long – up to 22 months – so it takes a long time to be able to confirm a pregnancy. We certainly are hoping for the best, and we appreciate your good wishes!"
