North American Asian Elephant Population 2022

Brilliant news, especially following the deaths of her calves, Batu and Ajay back in 2020. Although she does come from a decently represented line on her paternal side, and from a well represented line on her maternal side.

Mali's had three boys so far, so hopefully the next is a girl!

Kirina is theoretically more genetically valuable than Mali, so i'm assuming it's probably issues following from her 2015 stillbirth which are resulting in her not being able to successfully carry a full term pregnancy.

OH MY GOSH THIS IS THE BEST NEWS IN FOREVER! After the loss of Jasmine earlier this year at Albuquerque it’s good to see the Asian Elephant population still reproducing and having calves!
I mean it's not exactly unexpected. Its not like the entire continent is going to suddenly stop all breeding just because of two calves dying from EEHV.

Plus Karina is very much not the only pregnant cow in North America right now. Belle at Fort Worth is almost certainly pregnant, there's more than likely at least 2 or 3 preggo cows at Rockton, and a few others that I technically can't mention, but it wouldn't take a lot of imagination to guess them out.

Mali still has one surviving son named Chuck however isn’t Doc kind of genetically valuable or am I just imagining that? I’m personally hoping as well Malis calf is a girl in addition this calf I imagine is good news for the Asian Elephant population. We’ve so far have had/will have 2 births in the US in 2022 and I know of at least 4 calves born in 2021 in zoos in the US. 2021-2022 seem to be good years for calf reproduction in the US so far anyway

i never said it was unexpected. I’m just happy about Malis pregnancy is all. Wheres Rockton at exactly and what zoo there has 2-3 pregnant Asian Elephant females?

Rockton is African Lion Safari. Also re: Doc's genetics, he's nothing special. His sire is Charlie and dam is Alana, so numerous half siblings and some full siblings as well.

So the calf Mali currently is pregnant with has no genetic diversity?

Well no, it has fine "genetic diversity" in that it won't be inbred. However it will have low genetic value, relative to the rest of the North American population. If its a bull it will likely be destined to a long life as a bachelor/exhibit filler before potentially moving into a breeding situation. If its a cow of course it will be a wonderful addition as we need every young cow we can get, but once again, she'd also be related to like half the breeding animals in NA through Charlie, Vance or Indie.

Doc has fifteen living siblings between his parents. Quite a lot, although most are in circuses, besides Romeo (Fort Worth's breeding bull) and Rudy and Sundara at Cincinnati.

A bull as @Hyak_II mentioned will likely not be used for breeding. A cow on the other hand, while likely remain with Syracuse's herd to maintain the matrilineal line descending from Targa and Mali.

rudy and sundara are at Columbus but isn’t Romeo genetically valuable cause I thought he was?

Through his father Pete he is but through his mother Alana he is not as genetically valuable, and as of now he has two daughters through Shirley and a son through Bluebonnet born last year.

Yes, and Romeo is only a half sibling of Doc’s. They share the same mother (who’s line is thoroughly represented), but have different fathers. In Romeo’s case, his father, Pete is, making Romeo sort of genetically valuable

Very exciting news! Great for Syracuse after their recent losses. First pregnancy announcement (in the North American population) in what seems like forever, I think the last one was Phoebe’s last year?

Like @Hyak_II said, I’m almost positive Belle is pregnant as I saw a couple videos of her recently and she is showing a lot of mammary development. Very similar to Bluebonnet when we guessed she was pregnant last summer.

Other pregnant cows might be Rozie at ABQ, Rose-tu at Oregon, Shanti at Houston, Rani at STL, perhaps the Columbus sisters and if we’re lucky, Maharani at National. Wouldn’t be surprised if Ringling bred some of their cows before sending them to White Oak as well. I guess we’ll find out eventually though.

Columbus Zoo's adorable baby elephant celebrates 1st birthday

Beco, a male elephant at the Columbus Zoo came down unexpectedly with a serious medical condition. Hopefully he feels better and recovers!
As reported in the Columbus thread, unfortunately Beco has tested positive for EEHV. I’m quite surprised he’s tested positive at his age (13), as there have been very few cases over the age of 8. Hopefully his older age means he will be able to fight the virus and will survive.

i really think Beco though will be fine in all seriousness. Jasmine at the Albuquerque Zoo who caught the virus in December 2021 when she was 8 was still in the vulnerable age category. Considering Beco is 13 he should be able to fight it off with the help of medical treatment as well in all seriousness.

Columbus Zoo will be posting updates here about Beco as last night he tested positive for EEHV (Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus). He’s receiving round the clock care, he is responding to antiviral medication and other medical treatments. The zoo is also actively testing Frankie, who just turned 1 years old yesterday and is the most at risk to the virus.
