North American Asian Elephant Population 2022

https://blog.columbuszoo.org/columbus-zoo-and-aquarium/rallying-for-beco/?

Columbus Zoo will be posting updates here about Beco as last night he tested positive for EEHV (Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus). He’s receiving round the clock care, he is responding to antiviral medication and other medical treatments. The zoo is also actively testing Frankie, who just turned 1 years old yesterday and is the most at risk to the virus.

Beco update! We have very good news to share about Beco as he is responding very well to treatments such as antiviral medication, fluids, blood and stem cell transfusions. He is still eating which is very good news and the zoo is receiving a mobile EEHV lab from the Smithsonian National Zoo Saturday. So so far so good.

Beco responded so well only to succumb to the virus. That vaccine can't come soon enough.

well the zoo said he was responding well to treatments. This is really disturbing to read considering Beco was only 13 and the fatality rate in those most susceptible to the virus are ages 1-8. This is a very disturbing development when it comes to EEHV as elephants succumbing to the virus appears to no longer be just in the 1-8 range.

Something I’ve noticed across several cases if those that begin treatment once they’ve began exhibiting symptoms of lethargy etc. usually fail to respond to treatment; while the successful cases are those that are identified as cases via blood work before symptoms already appear. It a demonstration of the obvious that early detection is the best form of protection. Some of the European zoos do twice weekly blood tests year round as a preventative measure.

@John Marchwick Beco is the oldest captive elephant ever to die of EEHV, but 3 other elephants aged 9 or older also died of EEHV. Here is the list:
- 1:0 Asian Elephant Beco died yesterday at Columbus Zoo at the age of 13 years and 3 months.
- 0:1 Asian Elephant Kimba died on September 5th, 2004 at Houston Zoo at the age of 13 years and 2 months.
- 1:0 Asian Elephant Kiba died on August 30th, 1998 at Berlin Zoo at the age of 10 years and 8 months.
- 1:0 African Elephant Lucas died on April 10th, 2020 at Toledo Zoo at the age of 9 years and 10 months.

As @RhinoHippoElephantGiraffe posted, Beco has sadly passed away from EEHV. This is a very sad loss not only for the Columbus Zoo but for the entire North American Asian Elephant Population. My heart and prayers goes out to all of the staff at the Columbus Zoo especially the keepers. Hopefully little Frankie will not test positive.

The Columbus Zoo has posted about his death on Beco’s Blog.

According to a USDA Inspection conducted on May 17, 2022, the White Oak Conservation Center held 16 Asian Elephants. I was only aware of the 12 females who had arrived a little over a year ago, does anyone have any information regarding the 4 who have arrived since?

Perhaps these elephants are Alana, Icky, Shirley and Mala which would reunite these females with their daughters at White Oak.

Per a close friend of mine, they have also moved some males up with the females.

Hello!

I would like to clarify some information about the Columbus Zoos elephant program. I hope this will help clear up any information about the zoos breeding program.

I would like to explain why the Columbus Zoo has not had any offspring from Rudy and Sunny when they are 20 and 13. The main reason behind this is because the zoo wanted Rudy and Sunny to experience the birth of a calf and how an experienced mother would care for it to teach them about how to be a mother. When Phoebe became pregnant with Ellie, the zoo planed to breed Rudy and Sunny shortly after the birth so they would know how to raise their own calves but unfortunately Ellie passed away so they decided to wait for them to get pregnant until they could see Phoebe taking care of a calf. Once the zoo found out that Phoebe was pregnant again they started to work to get Beco to breed with Rudy and Sunny. Beco breed with both the girls before he passed away but it has not been announced if they are pregnant yet. AI also might have been used on the girls as I know they were talking about it but I am unsure whether they made any attempts. I currently suspect that Sunny might be pregnant as she has been noticeably been getting rounder over the past months. So far though I have not seen much growth of her mammary glands but she might not be to that point of her pregnancy, if she is pregnant, yet. Here is a picture of her from July 9 and you can clearly notice how round she is (Sunny is on the right)

Sunny is a rounder elephant but unless she is on a brand new diet to gain wait, I believe she might be pregnant. Meanwhile I have not seen much weight gained on Rudy leading me to believe she is not pregnant. If anybody as any questions about the Columbus Zoo’s elephant program please feel free to ask me!

the picture didn’t load but that’s good Beco bred with Sunny and Rudy both. Let’s hope one of 2 if not both are pregnant.

Here is another photo of her (she is the adult in the middle with her trunk up):

From the looks of it I can confidently say with now viewing two photos of her she’s more than likely pregnant. I’ve also searched up photos from beforehand (or at least when she wasn’t pregnant) and although she’s a quite a large girl, she didn’t have that tremendous width she has now.

Anyhow, fingers crossed.

If she is pregnant she would definitely have to be more than 12 months; which would place her to give birth sometime in Spring/Summer of next year. Hopefully an announcement is soon, but Columbus have only announced pregnancies after 18 months, so we may not find out until next year.

I heard Sundara was pregnant as early as last fall but I was told by other zoochat members she wasn’t even though I had heard she was showing signs she was.
