North American Bonobo Population

Thank you for passing on that sad info, Betsy. I suspected that something like that must be why there was no information available. Thanks also to WanderingDragon for your response.

INSPIRATION NEEDED:

I am giving a presentation introducing bonobos to a couple of groups of people who don't know anything about them. I want to end the presentation with some quotes from people who already love bonobos, to inspire the listeners to support conservation efforts themselves.

What would you bonobo lovers say to inspire someone to care about the plight of the bonobos? I am already presenting loads of facts (and photos - and photos of babies- lots of bonobo babies LOL). I'm looking for something deeper to connect emotionally with them.

One person said, "...Visit a zoo with bonobos because once you look into the eyes of a bonobo, you are forever changed." (I couldn't agree more.)

Please post your persuasive gems here!

Thanks

My question about Tutapenda the other day got me wondering about little Kaleb at Jacksonville Zoo. He was Kuni's and Bosondjo's son born in 2004. He was found dead in Jan 2009. Does anyone know if they ever released his cause of death?

Does anyone have any information on Nora who seems to have recently moved to the Cincinnati Zoo?

Nora-Jan is a female from Milwaukee. She was born in 2013 to Zuri and Tamia. I didn't know she moved! She was scheduled to, but I didn't know it happened already.

Gilda was transferred to Cincinnati to alleviate social challenges at Memphis, as they don't have a lot of room. Macumba, Gilda's son, was suggested to be transferred there as well. I guess they didn't go through with it.

Cincinnati now has 3.7 individuals.

His death is listed as unknown. Sorry, I don't have any more information.

I just read on the Columbus Zoo's Facebook page that Toby has been euthanized after suffering a stroke.

Is there a reason in particular that there seem to be so few births to match these deaths? Only one baby in the last five years despite a number of breeding age individuals.

Even one or two housing facilities would be a game-changer for the United States bonobo population.
True and echoing the Tampa debacle. This means the European population is building for expansion and the AZA is basically at a stand still with few holders and severely restricted breeding. This is also the reason Rhenen acquired bonobos from US imports added on some bred in France.

@Kifaru Bwana
Rhenen did not acquired bonobos from the US, this plan is no longer up to date.

The EAZA is not that strict than the AZA is, so a facility like Stuttgart is allowed to keep 24!!! bonobos having an enclosure capacity of 10!!!
Wow! Right now in the United States, there are 2 zoos over capacity by 1or 2 individuals, 1 at capacity, and 5 under capacity.

Would you say that the enclosures in the EAZA are too small for all of their individuals? I have not been to any European zoos, so I am not sure how big some of them actually are.

Bila-Isia, Lola, and Pabu are all individuals that have been considered being imported to Europe.
