North American Common Hippopotamus Population

Cincinnati's Tucker and Fiona have recently been seen breeding. No pregnancy has officially been confirmed, but it is most likely that Fiona is pregnant. Hopefully despite Fiona weighing 2,100 pounds and born 2 months premature, it is hopeful that the pregnancy will go well. If the breeding was successful (which is quite likely), then we can expect a hippo baby around June-July of 2023.

They've been seen mating and Fiona is on contraception - so it's not really a 'likely' chance, but there still is somewhat a chance she is pregnant.

If the pregnancy does go well though, we'll see issues surrounding space, so I hope she isn't pregnant. Especially due to her small size, a pregnancy and then a birth could potentially be very dangerous.

Stop. You have absolutely no way of knowing if she is pregnant or not, the zoo couldn't even tell this early if she was. Acting like you know what's going on, and that she is pregnant, benefits no one.

There are some incomplete updates from January 2023 that I noticed when I was looking at hipposworld.de today and affect the current population.

- Fort Worth Zoo now has just two cows. hipposworld.de/halterdetails4.php?ISBN1=X0222
- The Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo now keeps one cow, and previously the only known living animal there was a bull. hipposworld.de/halterdetails4.php?ISBN1=X0245
- The Greater Vancouver Zoo has two cows (no bull).

No, Vancouver absolutely has a male/female pair. It’s a full sibling pair originally born at Granby in Quebec. I remember seeing the male, Haben, as a tiny juvenile during his brief stay in Calgary in ‘05-‘06.

At Aggieland Safari in Bryan, Texas, they have a 1:0 Nile Hippo named "Howdy"
He arrived in April 2019, right around when the park opened.
He is probably "Howdi", who was born to Norman and Matilda at Oklahoma City Zoo on 8/24/76, then moved to Oakland a few months later.
hipposworld.de/tierdetails4.php?ISBN1=02271455
That is likely true, because in 2019, they celebrated "Howdy Week" from August 18th until September 2nd, so it makes sense that his birthday is somewhere around the middle of it.
Here is a link that mentioned him at the park just two weeks ago:

Would probably be Howdi who's living out his retirement years there. ;)

I have solved one of the mysteries that was talked about last year on this thread and remained unanswered since. With these two articles, I found that Gulf Breeze Zoo's Kiboko and Cleopatra are the parents of 1:0 Tank at the Capital of Texas Zoo. Tank's birth date has been confirmed as August 22nd, 2010.

Some extremely sad news to announce:
Fifty-year-old Pudgie (Uebi x Durka) has sadly passed away at Sedgwick County Zoo yesterday due to aging health issues. In addition, the zoo says that once fifty-one-year-old Sweetie Pie, Pudgie's companion for the last half-century(!) passes, the zoo will not bring any more Nile Hippos to the zoo, as they are not in the zoo's master plan. In addition, Sweetie Pie is also receiving geriatric specialized care.

*Haben at Greater Vancouver Zoo is female, though she was thought male until recently. I visited the zoo back in March (I have not mentioned this yet in this thread), and I heard a zookeeper say that they have two female hippos that are sisters. It even says that Haben is female on the zoo's website. Hippopotamus | Greater Vancouver Zoo Animals

Quick note, she was renamed from Haben to Habey.*

*Information given by @Cheetah on the Greater Vancouver Zoo News thread.

I want to ask a few questions. Will Zoo Granby Coumba leave the zoo, he is now 7 years old, and he is nearly sexually mature. Will Polita and Kiboko breed again. It has been years. What is the capacity of the hippo pool in Granby? Like how many adults they can hold.

Sad news, it was announced today that 45-year-old 0.1 "Water Lily" at Woodland Park Zoo will be euthanized early next week from declining health from cancer. :(

Should also be noted that the zoo is looking at facilities to transfer a (0.1) common hippo Lupe to another AZA-accreditated zoo, and that they are phasing out this species entirely with no plans on bringing them back.

Is it true Disney’s Animal Kingdom is down to 4 hippos? I belong to a Fiona & Fritz group where members post pics of other hippos they visit sometimes. Several days ago, a member posted a few pics from her visit to DAK & said she was told there are only 4 hippos there now. The employee incorrectly did tell her Augustus was one of the 4 remaining (the others being Henry, Tuma & Greta), as I know Augustus lives in the Dallas Zoo now. So that’s why I’m wondering if they could’ve been wrong about the total, as well. If that employee is correct, however, does anyone know what happened to the other 7? I tried to search for info online, but came up emptyhanded. I’m assuming Viviana, at her age, could've passed, but I couldn’t even find mention of that or if any others passed or were moved.

There is no way they could have lost 7 hippos in just a couple years. I visited in January and saw 3 or 4 but I don’t know if you could ever see all 11 out on 1 day?

Here is what I found out about the Disney hippos as of March 18th:
- Disney still had 11 hippos when I visited on March 18th, and I saw 10 of them (I did not see Hans).
- 4 of them (2.2) hippos can be seen from the Gorilla Falls Trail, and the other seven (n1*.6 [*Nacho, the male in that bloat is neutered]) can be seen from Kilimanjaro Safari bus ride.
- The two female hippos that can be seen at Gorilla Falls are Panchita and Mezcal, who are on exhibit together every morning.
- Those two are kept separate from the rest of the bloat when any of the other hippos (right now would be Tuma) have a calf because according to a hippo keeper there, they often try to convince the calf that THEY are their mother instead of Tuma, which the staff really do not want, so until Greta leaves Disney or becomes mature, Panchita and Mezcal will be on their own on exhibit.
- The two bulls you can see on Gorilla Falls Trail are Henry, the breeding bull, and his adult son Hans, both of whom do not share space with other hippos, and they alternate days going out on exhibit every afternoon (when I went it was Henry).
- Henry is recommended to breed with Tuma and Rosie, but lives alone otherwise, and they are not attempting that at the moment.
-Hans is not currently used for breeding.
- As for the Safari bus ride, there were two enclosures, one had three hippos, the other had four, meaning that there were definitely still eleven hippos total when I visited, though I am not 100% sure on the groupings, though it is very safe to say that Tuma and Greta are in the same enclosure because they are a mother and juvenile daughter pair.
