North American Eastern Black Rhino Population

Too bad that plan never came to be. According to COO Pfefferkorn they had planned to mix in Trails of Africa (elephant / rhino / hippo):
QUOTE:
" The signature exhibit of the Birmingham Zoo is the state-of-the-art Trails of Africa, home to the nation’s only bachelor herd of male African elephants. “Trails of Africa is special because of the all-male elephant management,” Pfefferkorn articulated. “It was a big risk the zoo took but is very special.” The herd can even be integrated with other animals. “We’ve mixed elephants in with rhinos and elephants in with our lone hippo,” Pfefferkorn explained. “When they built Trails of Africa they put in a chute for the rhinos and hippos to accesss the elephant habitat. The hippo picks a large pool while the elephants continue to move around the habitat. It’s done very well. At one point, I observed of the bulls being surprised by the hippo being in the pool but now it’s pretty benign. At night, the hippo comes out and grazes around the exhibit. We have the ability to connect the elephant habitat to our giraffe habitat and are considering letting giraffe and hoofstock move through and share the same space as the elephants.”

Would be nice to see the new design plans for the black rhino habitat. Could not find anything.

Some saddening news, 35-year old 1.0 Corky at Honolulu was euthanized on Tuesday, March 22nd, because of complications from kidney failure.

His former mate, 0.1 Satsuki, just passed away in late 2021 so it's very unfortunate that the zoo lost both rhinos within a few months of one another. Hopefully, the zoo is able to acquire a young breeding pair of rhinos soon and are finally successful in breeding as Corky and Satsuki never produced any calves despite having lived together for over 20 years.

That sure is sad news! I don't know whether Honolulu will get more Black Rhinos in the future or not.

1.0 Ricko at Lincoln Park Zoo passed away earlier today at the age of 25. This is very unfortunate as he sired no offspring and had a breeding recommendation with the zoo’s female, Kapuki. Fortunately, he comes from a well represented line and has numerous relatives spread throughout the country.

This leaves Lincoln Park with Kapuki and her two and a half year old son, Romeo. Romeo has a transfer recommendation and will most likely leave within the next year so I wonder what will happen with Kapuki. If we’re lucky, maybe Kapuki and Ricko were introduced prior to his death and she’s already pregnant, but sadly I doubt it.

As reported by @Wild wolverine in the Caldwell thread, 0.1 Christa at Caldwell Zoo was euthanized earlier this morning unfortunately :(

Fortunately, she has a good amount of descendants spread throughout the country and at nearly 37 years old she was the oldest of her species at the time of her death.

Her death leaves the zoo with no rhinos but hopefully the zoo will take in a breeding pair in the next few years and restart their previously successful breeding program.

That is definitely sad news, even though she lived to be 37. We've now lost two holders of Black Rhino in only a month (Caldwell and Honolulu), and those two rhinos were the top 2 oldest Black Rhinos in North America.

Kibibbi at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has given birth to a healthy female calf on July 9 Critically endangered rhino born at Cleveland zoo
This is absolutely fantastic news! This is the first female calf born in the population since Kamara in spring 2019. Fingers crossed Inge is pregnant as well (with a female calf).

Also the first rhino calf of any species born in North America this year (at least to public knowledge).

New holder! 5-year old Moyo was transferred from Saint Louis to Birmingham on the 11th of June. Moyo should be joined by a young female soon for breeding.

That's great news for Moyo, especially as his parents are very valuable.

It's also good to see Birmingham joining the breeding program for Black Rhinos after phasing out their White Rhinos last year. They're well equipped for breeding this species.

There's a whole lot of options regarding who the female will be, so I won't throw out my assumptions. ;)

I've recently been reading some stuff other threads, and is it true that the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is phasing out Black Rhinos?

Most likely yes, as @Kudu21 stated in the Los Angeles thread. It's truly a shame, and as an SD local, I'm quite disappointed :( Perhaps one day they'll make their way back to the park when it's under new (and better) management.

It's already been confirmed that Aria is headed to Honolulu and it's quite likely that Kendi will be heading there as well.

These last couple years have been depressing for the SDZ Parks. They lost so many rare species. Pandas, Shoebills, Gaur, and now Black Rhinos...

I agree, it's been really hard to see for all of us (especially us ungulate nerds). Some others we've lost that I can think of right now are Giant Eland, Grant's Gazelle, Markhor, Cuvier's Gazelle, Armenian Mouflon, and Goliath Heron. Plus Red-fronted Gazelle, Uganda Kob, Greater Kudu, and a few others are on their way out. The good thing though is that unlike most of these other hoofstock species, there is a pretty good chance that Black Rhino will be added back to the park's collection eventually. Most of these other species are very difficult to acquire and the zoo or safari park was/is one of the last few holders of them but Black Rhino will definitely continue to be around.

I certainly hope so...

The Cincinnati Zoo is planning to send Faru the zoo's breeding bull to another facility for breeding purposes, sometime in the next few months. It does not say where he is going but he is planed to mate with 2 females
