Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Blank Park are the only facilities with two females. I wonder if Cincinnati will bring in another male soon or if Seyia is already pregnant.
 
Honolulu now has Black Rhinos again!

Eight year old female, Aria, has arrived from San Diego Safari Park.

Apparently they have plans to acquire a mate too in the future.

I wonder how a rhino is transported to Hawaii.
 
Male "Faru" has been transferred from Cincinnati to Lincoln Park Zoo and will now be called "Utenzi" which was his original name (prior to being transferred to Cincy). He has a breeding recommendation with LPZ's 17-year old female, "Kapuki" for the time being. Last I heard, the zoo's younger male, "Romeo" will be transferred for breeding relatively soon and will be replaced with another young female to breed at LPZ. I heard this prior to Ricko's passing but since Cincy had stated earlier that Faru will be breeding with 2 females at his new home, I'm assuming the other female is still scheduled to arrive. Either way, I hope Faru is able to sire at least a few more calves as he's quite the valuable breeding bull.

Not a breeding move unfortunately, as he'll replaced the late Christa as Caldwell's resident black rhino.

Hopefully this opens up the space for a new male to arrive at Blank Park to breed with Ayana and her two daughters.

Kiano is very low ranking in terms of genetic value, he may even be the lowest ranking male in the population, so it’s no surprise that he’s been moved into a non-breeding situation.

Blank Park has stated that plans to transfer Tumani out are also in the works and Kamara also had a transfer recommendation as of last year so I’m assuming both girls will be transferred before a new male is brought in for Ayana.
 
January 2023 Update:

Summary of Events:
While we didn't have as many calves born in 2022 as in years past, we did have one very welcome addition - 0.1 "Dalia" was born at Cleveland in July and is the first female calf to be born into the population since April 2019. She is the third calf born to her mother, "Kibibbi", and father. "Forest", but their second calf together.

Unfortunately, we lost quite a few rhinos in 2022 but thankfully most of them were older animals:
  • 35-year-old, "Corky", at Honolulu Zoo was euthanized on March 22nd due to kidney failure. He was a very genetically valuable animal but unfortunately, he was unable to produce any offspring with his longtime mate, "Satsuki", who passed away in December 2021.
  • 25-year-old, "Ricko", passed away on April 8th at Lincoln Park Zoo. Unfortunately, he also did not sire any offspring during his time but unlike, "Corky", he comes from a well-represented line and has many relatives.
  • 36-year-old, "Christa", passed away on April 26th at Caldwell Zoo due to old age. She leaves behind three sons, two grand-offspring, and two great-grandsons.
There were also a number of transfers that occurred in 2022, most of which were for breeding purposes. As a result of these transfers we have lost one holder and gained another to balance it out!
  • 5-year-old, "Moyo" was transferred from Saint Louis Zoo to Birmingham Zoo on June 11th making Birmingham a new holder of the species.
  • 5-year-old, "Kesi Akua" was transferred from Pittsburgh Zoo to Birmingham Zoo at some point in 2022 to form a breeding pair with the aforementioned, "Moyo".
  • 8-year-old, "Aria" was transferred from San Diego Zoo Safari Park to Honolulu Zoo in September.
  • 18-year-old, "Utenzi" was transferred from Cincinnati Zoo to Lincoln Park Zoo in September/October to breed with female, "Kapuki".
  • 5-year-old, "Kendi" was transferred from San Diego Zoo Safari Park to Honolulu Zoo in November to breed with the aforementioned, "Aria".
  • 12-year-old, "Kiano" was transferred from Blank Park Zoo to Caldwell Zoo in November.
We also have one confirmed pregnancy due this year - 0.1 "Zuri" at Kansas City Zoo is pregnant with her first calf and is due this month.

Turns out “Zuri” at Kansas City Zoo had already given birth on December 31st itself! The calf’s sex is unknown as of now but is healthy and doing well.

Kansas City Zoo on Instagram: "The baby has arrived! Zuri, a critically endangered eastern black rhinoceros, gave birth to an adorable calf in the early morning hours on December 31! The rhinos’ animal care specialists report the calf is walking, nursing, and even playing spar, and that Zuri is a patient and attentive first-time mother. The barn is being kept quiet with limited human interaction to allow them plenty of time to bond, which is a very important process. Once mother and calf have had that bonding time, a neonatal exam will be performed in the coming weeks to confirm gender and overall health. We will report the gender then, and there will be an opportunity for the public to participate in naming the calf. There are only about 740 of this type of rhino left in the wild so this birth is also important for the subspecies as a whole. We are thrilled to introduce this new arrival to Kansas City!
