Interesting Tampa failed to mention his passing when his daughter (Ruka) was born last year, March 31.Howie passed away a little over a year ago.
Do you know the current numbers held there?CCTU is not AZA-accredited. I'm not sure which AZA facility has the most pygmies, and most (if not all) of the holders of larger herds of Pygmy Hippos are non-AZA.
I visited ZooTampa on March 20th, 2024 and I can confirm via staff that I saw Howie, as Zsa Zsa was off-exhibit due to expecting, which she gave birth to Ruka eleven days later. He presumably died sometime in April or May then, as he was mentioned when Ruka's birth was first announced in early April, they probably would have stated that he had only recently died.Interesting Tampa failed to mention his passing when his daughter (Ruka) was born last year, March 31.
I think we can expect to see Ruka placed into a breeding situation with her being Howie's only surviving calf.

Her name was Francesca. She was sent to OKC Zoo in 2017 and died there not long after. For the life of me I cannot remember the previous females name and have not found it searching. I remember her and Elgon had an article about them in a Zoo magazine. ~2014 is the time frame.
Brilliant news to have another calf from this successful pair - and even better to have another male, considering the surplus of males currently available for pairing globally.A male calf was born at the Tanganyika Wildlife Park to parents Pluto and Posie on June 26th.
He's been given the name 'Mars'.A male calf was born at the Tanganyika Wildlife Park to parents Pluto and Posie on June 26th.
According to the Facebook live posted by the zoo, the calf is a little boy.Penelope gave birth to her calf yesterday! The calf's gender has yet to be revealed.
John Ball Zoo on Instagram: "A little splash of joy has arrived at the Zoo We are overjoyed to announce the birth of our pygmy hippo calf! First-time parents Penelope and Jahari welcomed their 11-pound little one September 3, marking a historic moment as this is the first pygmy hippo calf born at the Zoo. Pygmy hippos are an endangered species with fewer than 2,500 estimated in the wild, so each birth is a vital step for conservation. Our animal care team is keeping a close eye on mom and baby as they bond behind the scenes, and both are doing well. This announcement was brought to you by @michiganfirstcu. : Zookeeper Amanda"
