I was at the zoo today for seasonal work orientation. Some things I noticed.
- Asia has progressed significantly since the last time I saw it in November. The soil has been terraformed and the foundations and frames of buildings have been laid. Seeded grass has also begun to grow in areas.
- With the trees still leafless, you have a good view of the Asia construction from the North American entrance and Rocky Coast areas.
- The wooden foot bridge that will cross the tram road and connect the pathway with Asia has been partially built.
- The spot where the bridge will connect is directly at the old Prairie Geyser exhibit, where the main pathway has been diverted onto the now demolished Prairie boardwalk while construction on the bridge begins on the pathway side.
Some 2023 News that have not been mentioned:
On January 11th, it was announced that the zoo transferred a (1.0) red wolf named Oak to the Western North Carolina Nature Center in North Carolina.

On February 13th, it was announced that the zoo transferred a (0.1) red wolf named Taylor to Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo in Connecticut.

On March 3rd, the zoo announced they bred and released (0.0.130+) gopher frogs back into the wild in the summer of 2022.

I don’t know if this has been posted in previous NC Zoo news threads. However, Governor Roy Cooper budget proposal will not only include hiring staff for the upcoming Asia exhibit and also a budget allocated for the overhaul of the old aviary. Now that is good news to read!
I remember that the plans for Australia included a smaller walkthrough aviary, so it'll be interesting to see the zoo manage multiple aviaries in the far future.
Two female American bison have arrived and are now on display.

The zoo posted a video on Facebook saying the Gorillas are back in habitat with a look at the new climbing frame.

I assume they are in the former Sand Cat exhibit in the Nocturnal gallery?

Yes, they went into the old Porcupine exhibit.
There are also now Baja Blue Rock Lizards and a Night Snake in the Desert Dome. The lizards are in with the desert tortoises and chuckwallas while the night snake is in the canyon.
