Okapis in Europe

@MennoPebesma is this the Tafari that was born at Chester Zoo a few years ago? If so it’s tragic that she has passed so young. I know her Dad Dicky died fairly recently.
Yes, that is her. She was born at Chester Zoo in 2012.

At Beauval she had injured herself in an accident. After that she didn't want to eat any more and she went into a sort of shock and died. She was also pregnant at that time...

Wow it’s unfortunate how male biased births have been lately - seems to be the same over here in the US as well, we haven’t had a female calf born since 2020.

This year, there are indeed quite a few males being born. Of the 7 okapis born in Europe this year, 6 are males. On the sex ratio of the total population this has not yet a big effect. The number of males and females is about the same. Out of 82 animals, 40 are male and 42 are female.

In the previous years more females were born in Europe:
2021: 4 animals, 1 male and 3 female
2020: 6 animals, 3 male and 3 female
2019: 7 animals, 1 male and 6 female

Some changes are coming for the okapis at Diergaarde Blijdorp in The Netherlands. The planned transport of okapi female Mhina to the United Arab Emirates is currently being prepared. Okapi male Ngwani is also going to move; to Frankfurt. If all goes well, he will leave soon. Both transports are on the recommendation of the studbook keeper.

Besides this list, this time I have also made a short overview of what, as far as I know, happened within the European population last year.

Births
Last year, 10 okapis were born in Europe. Nine males and one female.

Deaths
To my knowledge, three okapis died last year. Male Semuliki (4). And females Ahadi (19) and Faraa (17).

Transfers
To my knowledge, four okapis moved to another zoo last year.

Number of holders
Last year, there was one new holder for the okapi: Parc de Branféré in France.

With all info found in this topic and the excellent work doneon several websites, I made a pedigree tree off all the okapis who are now living in Europe. The file can show all the offspring of an individual or show all the ancestors of an individual. I made it with a genealogy program for humans. If anyone is interested, I can send a gedcom file, which you can import in any genealogy program you like. Just send me a PM.

At the Cologne Zoo, okapi Kisanga has died. At 27 years old, she was by far the oldest okapi living in Europe. Kisanga's extreme old age became more and more of a problem for her. Due to her bad teeth, she could no longer chew her food very well and lost more and more weight. Eventually, she developed osteoarthritis in her front paw, which made her move less and less. It was therefore decided to euthanise her.
