Kiki, an 18-year-old African elephant, gave birth to a calf at 11:33 a.m. today. Mom and calf are doing well. The gender and weight of the calf are unknown at this time. The calf is the first elephant born at the Zoo.

Animal Care Staff implemented a 24-hour watch for Kiki Thursday, January 6, when they noticed a continual drop in her progesterone levels, indicating labor would take place soon.

Kiki delivered the calf with all females in the herd present. At this time, the Elephant Family Quarters will remain closed to the public to allow Animal Care Staff time to observe bonding, maternal behaviors and nursing.

Callee, the father, is 21 and joined Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium in 2019.

The Zoo is awaiting the arrival of a second African elephant calf also due this winter.

As the City of Omaha announced a temporary mask mandate indoors for the next 4 weeks minimum, the zoo announced accordingly that effective tomorrow, masks are required for all indoor areas.
Masks were required indoors when I visited last summer. When did this end?

Visited for the first time this year and have a number of updates:

The Desert Dome Plaza construction is well under way, forgot to post that in December of last year it was as well. Here are a couple pictures of the area.

In the Lied Jungle, there are now Frilled Lizards in the last terrarium of the first cave. Finally saw the new Malayan Tapir Calf! The zoo hasn’t announced a name or gender yet, but the calf is at least 7 or 8 months old. This gives the zoo 4 tapirs at the moment. The parents and the calf in the normal exhibit, the older offspring is in the South America island exhibit.

In the Desert Dome, there are a couple areas under refurbishment. The Dwarf Mongoose exhibit is getting some touch ups of the rock work.

And the Central African Canyon area is getting refreshed.

Over in Asian Highlands, the new viewing area for the Indian Rhinos and Pere David’s Deer is not open just yet.

One last update, there is now a Red Panda that switches on and off exhibit with the Blue Monkeys, Angolan Colobus, and the Sulawesi Crested Macaques in the Gorilla Valley. An odd location to be sure but looked at home in there.

Any updates on the orangutan renovation?

@MGolka Thanks for your updates. What is being built in the Desert Dome Plaza?

There won't be any new animals, but the zoo is overhauling the visitor area (Desert Dome Plaza) that is on the map below. There will be additional seating areas for families, a variety of foliage planted, perhaps some paving done, etc., in an overall 'beautification' of that part of the zoo. After this project, the zoo literally has nothing public in the pipeline as the Master Plan became complete last year.

Per an email from the zoo, the Elephant Family Quarters opens to the public on Monday. Guests will have to reserve timed tickets to enter. The pathway down to the doors of the building have had tents installed and a temporary queue established.
