Orang utans in Europe

There is no general topic for orang utans in Europe, so I thought I`d start one.

Some news from Spain:

Baby orang utan (bornean species) born in Santillana de Mar (Spain) to female Tuah and male Bodi. The femle arrived from Zurich some time ago together with her son Dahulu, to teach the two young handraised females Victoria and Juliana how to raise babys. Seems like the plan is working, the experienced mother Tuah is raising her new baby well. Unfortunately, the facilities in Santillana de Mar are not good and for so many orang utans, they really need to do something.

There is another baby orng utan in Spain, Madrid Zoo, whose mother died and is therefore handraised:
Boo, el bebé orangután del zoo de Madrid, ya tiene padrino

Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa

Sumatran orang utan born in Lisbon Zoo - mother is Janina, born in Hagenbeck, father Ziki. The baby`s big sister Harta (born in Hagenbeck and moved to Lisbon together with her mother Janina) is also living there.

Can someone post the composition of the orangutangs groups at Hannover, Hamburg, and Berlin , please?
Does someone know what happened to the female Sanda at Wuppertal zoo?

Do you know when Nuremberg zoo stopped to keep orangutans?
This Monday I went to Koln zoo a there where five orangutans which except for the male came to the zoo a few years ago, but what happened to all the orangutans that were kept at the zoo since from 2000 onwards? I'm asking you this because a review from the website "Les zoos dans le monde" made in 2003 said that there where much more orangutans.

Jersey/Prague move.

From the Jersey threads; Sumatran female Mawar and her son Gempa have been sent to Prague, presumably to join Chester -born male 'Padang'.

Blackpool zoo's Bornean orangutans

Victoria (f) born 17/06/84 at Blackpool zoo
Cherie (f) born 09/04/97 at Blackpool zoo
Summer (f) born 23/05/02 at Blackpool zoo
Raman (m) born 20/11/98 at Leningrad zoo

Raman is un-related to the three females. Cherie and Summer are Victoria's daughters, the zoo hope Raman breeds with Summer and Cherie but not with Victoria as they see her as 'too old'.

They may not want to breed from her any more but Victoria is 27- only middle-aged for an Orangutan. Some females (if allowed to) go on breeding until they are in their forties and would probably do so in the wild too.

Okay, an exaggeration and I've changed it...;) Philadelphia's Sumatran female Guarina had her last baby when she was probably at least forty however and I suspect there have been others too. Bulu at Paignton had one at age 36 and might have bred again had a male been present.

The point I'm making is I wish zoos wouldn't give the explanation of 'too old' to breed when its not the case. If they don't want to, or cannot breed from an animal anymore- for whatever reason- that's fine, but in many cases its misleading to give out 'old age' as the reason.

You are right, Pertinax, that is a problem indeed.

For example Stuttgart stopped breeding with his wild caught male "Buschi" (born ~1960) in the 90s. They gave the explanation he was too old and the breeding was too stressful for him. Result: His bloodline nearly became extinct (only his grandson Masala is still alive and fertile).

Guarina was born in the wild, Bella at Hagenbeck too. She gave birth to a girl in 2005, came to Hagenbeck in 1964 and was born approximately in 1961. The majority of females that achieved an age of 35-45 and had access to a fertile male (Frankfurt, Jersey for example) became postmenopausal with an age of 35-40.

I think most males can probably go on breeding almost until they die(as in people). The old male 'Siam' at Duisburg was unrepresented until he started fathering offspring at a very advanced age, also 'Major' at (I forget the name) in France, has still bred recently.

So Bella must have been about 44 when she had a baby in 2005?

I think in the Blackpool case, they maybe don't want more young from Victoria, she has throat sac impaction problems and being the most dominant animal, the much younger male probably won't mate her anyway- so 'too old' covers a multitude of other reasons.

"Siam" (born ~1960) started fathering in the early 70s and he went in breeding until he died, unfortunately only two children of him survived and achieved adulthood, "Suma" (born 1993) at Dortmund is handreared and unfertile, "Tuan" (born 1998) at Hagenbeck is also handreared, we hope and await him breeding.

Basel Zoo is going to receive six young Pongo abelii in september - 3,3 from Chester (Zoo), Berlin (Zoo), Amneville (Zoo) and Leipzig (Zoo).

Any idea, who are/is the one(s) from Chester?
