Orangutans in Europe 2021

0:1 Bornean orangutan at Paignton Zoo, named 'Gambira' has been PTS due to a leg fracture which had not healed.

Do any other Zoochatters think that following the demise of Gambira at Paignton Zoo,Mali and Tatatu’s move to Colchester might be permanently cancelled? The main reason for Mali and Tatau’s move was to free up space although with Gambira’s sad passing the required space has tragically been made.

Unfortunately this is not the case. Poor Gambira was usually kept with Chinta, her daughter Natalia and male Wousan. Mali and Tatau are always kept separately as Mali ('the Iron Lady') is not compatible with the others. So no space will be freed up.

@gentle lemur what do you mean by Mali is incompatible with the other Orangutans? @gentle lemur are you suggesting that Mali (The Iron Lady) is aggressive and antisocial?

Orangs are all antisocial, when compared to the African apes. I believe that Mali is a particularly intelligent and strong-willed individual and her keepers respect her abilities, @Gigit can probably provide more detail.

Indeed. I always think of Mali as being fiercely intelligent. She was kept with the other orangs before becoming a mother and they got along well enough. I remember one particular occasion towards the end of her pregnancy when she spent some time grooming Gambira, but that all changed once she'd given birth and became naturally protective of her baby. She hasn't been given the chance to demonstrate whether she's softened and become more sociable since because, as I understand it, they didn't want her to get pregnant again, presumably as their intention was to move her on.

New holder Zoo Lodz has announced the first of the 4 Sumatran Orang-utans they'll be receiving for the Orientarium, 1:0 named 'Joko' from Boissiere.

Is it known whether they will get 1.3 Sumatrans or two small groups? In the Poland board they wrote that they will get their orangs from France, Switzerland and Germany. If they get a young Sumatran group - what I suppose - the German should be Najla (*2012) of Zoom Gelsenkirchen, she's the only Sumatran female who needs to leave in the next time. In Switzerland there are Mimpi (*2012) in Zurich and Ketawa (*2013) in Basel. But that's only the most probable guess for a 1.3 group

I would expect there to be more than one male, and a situation of 2:2 would be a much more likely outcome in my opinion :)

We'll see... other male candidates would certainly be around in all three countries... question is how the enclosure looks like and if it's separable, two males together is tricky.

Here is a photo of the exhibit under construction on the Facebook page 'Zakochaj się w Łodzi' and it certainly looks like the indoor enclosure will be split.

It is not natural for ANY orangutans to be sociable, particularly the Bornean species, apart from a mother and her young. All 'social groups' in zoos are an artefact of captive management. Unsurprising that some individuals are not compatable wih others.

Sumatran orangutan Conny apparently died at Hagenbeck/Hamburg
Tierpark Hagenbeck has now announced that the day before her death, 'Conny' gave birth to a male offspring, although the reason for her death was a heart defect. Her son has been named 'Berani' and is being foster-reared by 'Bella', who is the oldest Sumatran Orang-utan in captivity at the age of 60.

I know you've said its under construction, but I do hope they end up using the vertical space properly.. or even better, allow them access to the mesh :)
