Orangutans in Europe 2021

The point of the transfer? It depends who you ask. At least you can see Mali and Tatty which is more than we in Paignton can do, although I doubt that you'll see Tatty behaving in the joyous way she did here.

Well the enclosure was made with breeding in mind and I guess everyone thought the zoo would breed Tiga once Rajang died, especially since things have slowed down with the chimps. I expected Mali and Tatau to form a breeding group similar to Chester's Sumatran group. I have always loved the orangutans for the past few years, however at the time neither Rajang or Tiga moved around a lot. I did visit on Tigas birthday one year (maybe last year or the year before). I waited from when Rajang died(12/12/18) until i checked the zoo news like I always did one day and found out they finally announced new individuals (Mali and Tatau) on my birthday in 2020 (2/3/2021)- after waiting all that time it was an almost fairytale story- as having a big piece of zoo news happen on my birthday was something I always thought about. And it then took until 15/5/21 for the zoo to announce that they had arrived 3 months ago. I was quite happy and assumed that the group would bond and then maybe breed in the near future as I was sure in the long term that is why they were here- and who doesn't want to see a baby orangutan! So all in all I find this news pretty disheartening. I assume it because Malis brother or sister that is Tigas parent resides at Twycross zoo?

Yes, Tiga's father, Batu, is Mali's brother. I was the opposite of you - after hearing that they would be leaving Paignton, I was praying for delays and a change of plan. By the way, 'Tatau' may be her official name but she has always been 'Tatty' to those who know and love her!

I saw the first baby(Sungai) on my visit. They said the baby had some deformity I believe, but this second one seems to indicate the problem is with the mother. I was half waiting for this to happen but hoping it wouldn't of course.

I know about her nickname Tatty and I know she must be very important at Paignton, at Colchester we just needed something to make the enclosure more interesting, as Tiga has never been a very active orangutan. I personally just wanted more orangutans partly for the hopes of young!

And seeing how you feel I possibly wouldn't even mind if they returned to Paignton in the future now.

That’s sad news. Something similar occurred at Adelaide Zoo. Their female orangutan (Karta) lost several infants before it was discovered she had an anatomical issue (small nipples) that obstructed breastfeeding - meaning the infants received no milk.

In the case of Sinta, the issue occurs as the infants get older and appear to have something to do with their teeth re. suckling, but either way it’s clear supplementary feeding is the way to go. Hopefully the zoo will trial this with the next infant. It wouldn’t be hard to train Sinta to present her infant at the mesh.

I remember the saga of Adelaide's Karta and her several lost infants over the years.

In the case at Paira Daiza they announced after it died that the first baby had a jaw deformity that obstructed suckling. However the problem now appears to lie more with the mother than the babies. If the babies are in fact perfectly normal, with no deformity, then a repeat breeding with assisted feeding should be possible.

I got to Rajangs Forest at around 14:00 yesterday whilst the sealion show was taking place and Tiga and Mali were in two of the separate bedrooms whilst being trained by the same keeper. When I went to the outside viewing Mali, followed by Tiga ventured to the right side of the enclosure and climbed up on the wall before Tatau jumped out from behind a log where she was hiding and ran off inside before coming back outside and later after I went on a nearby Halloween walk was sitting with Mali on top of a climbing frame where they sat with a blanket, while Tiga was sitting where Mali was previously.
