Paignton Zoo Paignton News 2020

The new Spider Monkey seems to be getting on well with the females. The Ape House has re-opened to visitors (hurray!). I could see only one Hyacinth macaw and the remaining Roadrunner had been replaced by a Toucan up in the parrot aviaries area.

@Gigit how are all of the Western Lowland Gorillas and Bornoan Orangutans, also how did both Ape species react to seeing the public in their house for the first time in over 6 months?

Are there any arrivals or transfers planned for the Western Lowland Gorillas or the Bornaian Orangutans? I know that prior to the Coronavirus pandemic, there, were plans for Mali the Bornoan Orangutan and her young daughter Tatu to move house and join male Orangutan Tigga at Colchester Zoo. This move has gone totally unmentioned since the national pandemonium that I have just mentioned. If Mali and Tatu's planned move still happens there will obviously be space for two new females too become members of Paington Zoo's Orangutans. As Awan at Monkey World is reaching adulthood and still resides with her Dad Tuan my theory is that Awan could possibly move to Paington to fill the gap left by Mali and Tatu's departure. I'm not aware of the situation with the Studbook for Bornain Orangutans, but I'm sure that there are more females within the European population that could relocate to Paington Zoo.

Additionally there has been talk for years regarding Gambira moving to another overseas zoo.

I wasn't at the zoo on the Ape House's first day of opening so I don't know how they reacted.

I think it's been pointed out several times on here that any gorilla moves are very unlikely.

I believe Mali and Tatty's departure was designed to free up space for the other orangs, so there would be no point in replacing them if they do move.

I have heard nothing about Gambira being moved for a long time and would think it's very unlikely.

Bornean.

Before they bring in any more Orangs, they really should add some climbing structures on the islands to replace the trees that had to be felled or were storm damaged. It’s gone from being a brilliant exhibit to one that resembles their natural de-forested jungle home!

@TriUK this is really not Paington Zoo's fault the weather in England is pretty diabolical at times. I would recommend that Paington and other Animal attractions within the country make trees out of fiberglass than coat them with sinfetic wood,or even real bark that can be replaced every so often. All in all I think that the Gorilla and Orangutan enclosures at Paington are of a respectable size and quality.

In the future I would like Paington too acquire some Female Gorillas and have a breeding group. I think that Paington should retain one of the bachelor males and from a family group around him. @Pertinax and @Gigit also known as the Ape expert's do you agree with my points?

So in that scenario where do the other males go? There is a huge surplus of spare male gorillas in Europe and problems both now and into the future with housing them all. I'd kind of like to see a male/female group at Paignton too but the reality is it is better that they continue to just house males...

@Pertinax could Paignton possibly bring in some female Gorilla’s while retaining the males that already reside at the Zoo? The Gorilla house is not full to capacity so surely there is space to add additional females

Paigntons bachelor group are one of 2 (other being Disney animal kingdom) that seems to be referenced frequently in husbandry advice etc. So I'm sure Paignton would outweigh potential breeding for the considerable contributions they are having to husbandry globally.

The three males are already split from Pertinax so space is at a premium. The only way they could do that would be to build additional accomodation- preferably for the Orangutans, in which case yes, they could house an additional group. But in the current climate and the problems they already have, its not going to happen.

Probably because the EEP co-ordinator was previously associated with this zoo.

I don't doubt it, but in sure they would want to keep up with this going forwards.
I am not disagreeing with you. I see the current situation, 3 young adult males, and one seperated older silverback(Pertinax) as a semi-permanent arrangement. The only problem will be if the younger silverbacks start to fight and have to be seperated at all- this is a fairly common occurrence.

The house is definitely at capacity with four silverback gorillas. Creating space for females would require three males to be transferred elsewhere, which has already been stated to be highly unlikely, due to the genetic over-representation of the three teenage males in the EEP and global population.

I agree it's not ideal currently. Personally I'd like to see both islands become the gorilla complex and expand the work they are doing.

I can think of at least one member on here in addition to myself who would probably heartily argue for the opposite, and the whole area given over to orangs!

(That’s @Gigit for the avoidance of doubt)

Either way would he a bonus for the species chosen.

I personally think that the whole Ape house should be dedicated to Western Lowland Gorillas. Following this I think a brand new Sumatran Orangutan exhibit should be constructed. I think that the new enclosure should be built on the site of the original Paignton Orangutan house that was demolished about 7 years ago. I feel like Paignton are wasting a large plot of land by having this vacant land as a kids play area and picnic area,it’s even more ludicrous seeming that there are two other large Play and Picnic areas located within the Zoo. Firstly there is the large Play area that was rebuilt and is located near the Toucan enclosure and secondly there is the Play and Picnic area that is adjacent to the refreshments kiosk and opposite the Train track that curves around the lake.
@Pertinax and @Gigit the Paignton Zoo ape experts can you please give me your verdicts?

You got 1-2 million to donate?

@TriUK unfortunately I am not lucky enough to have this amount of money. I’m sure that Paignton Zoo could fundraise in order to gain the required amount of money!

Although I think a good idea, I think they may need that level of fundraising to keep going for the next couple of years.

I like monkey heights, but maybe this could be upgraded into a great ape habitat.

Again the money just isn't there.

@The Hedgehog the area you're suggesting is far too small for an orangutan enclosure.

It wouldn't really make sense to change the species of orangutan they hold.

Suggesting they could simply fundraise in order to build a multimillion-pound orangutan habitat when they're currently fundraising to stay operational is a bit far-fetched, don't you think?
