Some updates from a visit on Saturday;

- The laughing thrushes in the old Mauritian Kestrel aviary in the ‘cul-de-sac’ path opposite the Spider Monkeys have moved (?) and been replaced with Speckled Pigeons.

- Seriema (pair) have moved into the ex Electus Parrot Aviary (2nd from left) opposite the Cottage aviary.

- A new exhibit (netted aviary) will be constructed (unsure of location) for the currently off show Pelicans in the new year, as well as an extension to the current flamingo house.

- the male Bongo has passed away leaving two females, one much younger than the other.

- work has progressed on the new baboon landscaping, with sections of the now dismantled playground slide being buried into the hillside to create tunnels. Tree trunks have been concreted in and Rock shelters have been created.

- The new female maned wolf has settled in well and is very ‘showy’.

- a huge area has been cleared next to the current Takin exhibit, ready for a new Red Panda enclosure to be built. See pic.IMG_7251.jpeg

Baboon enclosure update with pics of hillside landscaping @Pertinax

Many thanks for putting this up. I'm sure it will be an improvement both for the Baboons and the viewing public, and I know the old exhibit is really past its shelf-life. I will miss the 'rock'-style of exhibit though, even if I'm aware I've always groused about how you couldn't look over the wall to study/look at them close up, as used to be possible at some European zoos with a similar design. But I'm sure the baboons will find the new setting a lot more stimulating with the different substrates and overall space. Indoor viewing will be a bonus too. It is pretty much what I expected it to look like given its basically a converted field.

I remember the baboons were not in the collection before Baboon Rock was opened- they were obtained from outside to populate the new exhibit though I don't know where from- a European zoo possibly. I didn't know about the plans for other inmates of Bear Row that were scotched though.
