Paignton Zoo Paignton Zoo news 2024

I
Covered, enclosed and wholly bird proof is DEFRA's definition of bird-flu proof housing.
All they would potentially have to do is close it during outbreaks.
Yes, the Desert House is a large old glasshouse(afaik), entirely covered. My guess is they didn't want to lose yet another exhibit by closure during a BF outbreak, they have enough problems at present with losing species/exhibits. They have centred (most of) the birds in one area of the zoo which could be closed if necessary and the Desert house is not within that area. Someone with more regular access to the zoo might be able to add more.

Nothing to add, that’s why they’ve removed birds to areas they can close off if need be.

Visited this afternoon, very busy! Which is always good to see.

Few bits…

Fence has started going up in the desert house for the porcupines (confirmed by a keeper they are going in there). Apparently they are having to redesign it as the porcupines are chewing EVERYTHING.

A female potoroo arrived this week to join dumble. No name yet though.

The baby red river hogs are insanely adorable. They believe they are a male and female and have been named after African fruit (which I have promptly forgot the names!).

Kunekune pigs will be arriving tomorrow to go into the enclosure next to the porcupines, and once they move the pigs will get the whole thing. They are also collecting 5 red necked wallabys to join the collection we have.
Good news re. Potoroo, Pigs & Wallabies. Will the Red N Wallabies join the Swampies or occupy another area?

Can you see how the Giraffes are getting on especially Janica? Are they now using the exstension paddock and what are the plans for the herd? New Bull plans

Most of them are now using the old elephant enclosure!

No plans for a bull as it stands (was discussing this 2-3 weeks ago).

Any plans to move 1 or 2 of the younger female giraffes? Unless there's any breeding issues(genetic issues) they have 4 younger females which are all sisters(3 of them full) that are not that well represented in the UK. There's at least one UK collection that possibly could benefit from receiving one of them imo

Which giraffe (Name, Sex, DoB) are on site now?

Little things, but they mark a significant shift forward…, a return of cave (Mexican) fish to the tropical house, some residents confirmed as staying in the collection that were listed as leaving, a couple of enclosures occupied (domestics like Kune Kune & Jacob’s sheep) and a general air of positivity in the zoo today despite imminent staff redundancy - it wasn’t just the Torbaydos sunshine. Re. the collection: still a long, long way to go, but the short stabilising plateau feels like it has started to rise after a consistent drop for a number of years.
The wallaby enclosure had some screening around it probably due to aforementioned new arrivals and the car parks were ‘rammed’ hopefully signifying a large cash intake. C’mon!!, we’re hopefully getting there!

This feels like fantastic news. Not a whole lot to report, but just that slight sense of things starting to improve, no matter how small the improvement, really gives a sense of positivity.
