Palm Beach Zoo Palm Beach Zoo News

This statement from the CEO was unexpected:
"The facts as we know them confirm that one of our most senior and experienced animal experts who was highly qualified and a leader in her zookeeper position, secured a portion of the tiger night house with a tiger in it, and then entered that same portion of the night house after it was clearly designated as accessible by a tiger. Under Palm Beach Zoo policy, zoo employees are never allowed to enter a tiger enclosure to which the animal has access.
Why or how this could possibly occur is the subject of five ongoing investigations, including our own."

Palm Beach Zoo CEO issues statement on Stacey Konwiser's death - wptv.com

The statement was followed by a prepared Q&A which included this:

7.) Is it still a mystery to the Zoo of how Konwiser died? Or have state/federal authorities not shared their investigative findings with the Zoo?

"There is absolutely no mystery as to how Stacey Konwiser died. The question is: why did a deeply talented and experienced Zookeeper, fully aware of the presence of a tiger and knowledgeable of our safety protocols, enter a tiger enclosure into which a tiger had access? There are currently five separate ongoing investigations looking into this question. These investigations involve questioning everyone who can shed light on the facts of the actual event. To date, no findings or reports have been issued."

Yes, to add some clarification to it, the keeper did not attempt to enter the same space as the cat at any time. She was a very experienced woman with many years of big cat work under her belt. A barrier failure was the cause for contact between woman and cat, and how the tiger escaped its immediate enclosure.

How do you have this information?

Interesting update from the zoo:
President of Palm Beach Zoo gives new details on Stacey Konwiser's death | Local News - Home

Two maintenance workers heard the zookeeper scream. Nobody knows why she was in the enclosure, normal procedure would have been to notify other keepers by radio. They did consider shooting the tiger, but it was directly over her, prey-guarding. Also, the shot was supposedly a bit tough, through a narrow mesh chute.

BTW, the video of the press conference is particularly good. Well worth watching, if you have the time for it. Highly informative.

I'm not trying to speak ill of the Keeper who was killed or any Keeper for that matter but why does it always seem that whenever something like this happens in a first world country the victim was nearly always doing something they shouldn't have?

Probably because first world economies have the wealth and accountability to eliminate most other risks.

We don't necessarily have more protocol violations, but we have gotten it down to where that's almost the only thing that can cause an accident anymore.

Can someone tell me which malayan tigers are now in Palm Beach Zoo? I think it must be the male HATI, the female BERAPI API and one of the brothers BUMI or ANGIN. But, some news speak of 1 male and two female tigers?

(sorry if my english isn't correct - I need more practise :o)

I can't help but think that she just had a moment of absentmindedness and unfortunately moments of absentmindedness can kill, not that I am trying to speak ill or her or the Zoo.

I visited the zoo today and posted several pictures to the gallery. A review will be on Zoophoria soon. A few notes:

- The zoo's last kangaroo passed away but they plan on bringing more in.
- The zoo's siamang has been sent off to Woodland Park and the former siamang habitat is now occupied by a spider monkey (the rest of the spider monkeys live in Tropics of the Americas.)
- Saw a tiger, tapir, capybara and giant anteater swim in the same day- great luck!
- Most exciting of them all- a new ocelot habitat is being constructed in Tropics of the Americas.

Any thoughts on the relatively new Florida panther, white alligator, and ibis exhibits?
