Edinburgh Zoo Pandamonium to hit Edinburgh! #2

A very rough calculation reveals that Edinburgh will be into profit if the Pandas can bring in around 80000 extra visitors a year..we can be cynical about China all day long but it seems to me that money will be raised from people who would NOT otherwise be spending on any kind of conservation[ in the main].Animal charities are 7th rated on the UK "giving" scale-and then overwhelmingly for welfare issues,it seems to me that any way of "forcing" people to give to conservation[even if its Scotland not China]is a brilliant notion.

Pandas on Tour - YouTube

It's a bit cheesy but I guess they need to make the most of it and it's also an opportunity to promote Edinburgh as a destination in general.

The cartoon pandas are a lot like Adelaide's (pictured below)

I've had a look through this thread but can't seem to find anything about it but I was wondering if Edinburgh have made any online presentations about the exhibit? I remember when Adelaide's were coming the zoo put heaps of information on their website about the exhibit and its features.

Thanks for that Shirokuma. I just love looking at exhibits and pandas always get pretty lavish ones.

In case you are unaware, this one is a refurbished Ape House(for Gorillas and Orangutans). I think it will be far more suitable for the Pandas than for its previous occupants though.

Quite a transformation from this.............

And I would say a good model of effectively rennovating something already in place for a less than enormous ammount of money compared with some projects.

Wherabouts in the Zoo have the Guinea Baboons ended up? Will they keep them longterm or want to get rid of them now there is no old ApeHouse that needs filling with animals anymore?

When I visited in September they were in what I think was originally an off-show/separation part of the large Lion enclosure (basically walk to the left, slightly downhill, from the indoor enclosure viewing window). Viewing was a bit restrictive and a good photograph would have been very difficult.

They were a good group, fantastically active and I spent a good 20 minutes or so watching them, unfortunately I expect a lot of people didn't notice them or know they were there.

I didn't find them all that hard to photograph - must have been lucky with the lighting and angles that day!

Photo's weren't my best, but nothing I would delete from my camera :)

From what i remembe the baboons were only at at the zoo while their enlosure was getting rebuild at another zoo in Paris. Things could have changed tho :)

That's correct but Paris Zoo is being completely rebuilt so they could be at Edinburgh a long while yet.

I'm a snapper, not a photographer, and couldn't get the cage mash out with my camera.:)

Oh, I'm the same :) I have to rely on a point-and-shoot too, but the baboons were lit such that my camera focused on them and not so much the mesh - usually I have the exact same problem!

Karen i think it was yourself i met at Tywcross Zoo earlier this year when i came to see the snowleopard cubs?... if so then now you know the feel i had about seeing those two little guys...lol

We did chat to lots of people at Twycross :D We were there on 11/10/2011 and spent a couple of hours in Himalaya but alas saw no cubs!! I am usually as close to the enclosures as I can get with large elbows taking hundreds of photos lol

Think I may have chatted to a zoochatter at Marwell on 14/10 by the snow leopard cubs (did see them) showed him my live view and discussed lenses

Thought I met a lovely one at Monkeyworld but was not to be :o just another expert!!!

I hope Edinburgh come up with a system before I go late next year that means non members entitled to free entry (on Colchester/Chester etc membership) don't have to buy a ticket to guarantee a time slot. I would not risk going all that way and not being able to get a 'walk-in' slot.

I am looking forward to first visiting HWP in the first week of our holiday :D

Have told my partner we HAVE to see the pandas next year as I have never seen one!! (1 expensive holiday including a tanker of petrol booked) Have since found out from my dad I did see a sleeping one at London Zoo oops :p

Seeing a Panda that is not asleep is a challenge !

Even that's not hard. Seeing one that isn't sitting on top of a pile of bamboo munching away is the greatest challenge of all. At Adelaide Zoo they were doing this every time I went passed their exhibit.
