Peak Wildlife Park Peak Wildlife Park opening and news 2015

Not sure about the plans for a large African experience. Personally I wouldn't have African savanna animals on account of the local climate, which is quite cold and damp for much of the year and not suitable for African plains animals. But that's my opinion. If it were up to me, I would concentrate on the type of animals that Highland Wildlife Park keeps, which would be much more in keeping with the climate. In fact, I don't think I'm the first to suggest that. I seem to recall somebody else suggesting it.

Blackbrook.....

Didn't the previous regime have to replace their Zebras with Reindeer for climate reasons?

Nope they got rid of the zebras, due to a problem keeping them in!!

They did however have to get rid of the Red Kangaroo and much later the Red-necked Wallaby due to serious foot problems due to the damp nature of the ground!

They also lost a group of 7 Sitatunga due the extreme cold damp conditions that the place has over winter!!

Which, considering the natural habitat of the taxon is very damp indeed, really does say something about how damp and cold the area can get.

I can understand the Reds having problems, as they are a dry desert species. But Red necked Wallaby also occurs in Tasmania, parts of which share similarities of climate(heavy rainfall, snow, fog etc) with the Peak District!I think that's also why they survived as a feral colony so successfully for many years in this same area.

Yes to lose Sitatunga, in so many numbers, is quite surprising. They are very well adapted to wetland areas, so perhaps there were other factors, certainly they don`t like prolonged cold, but perhaps there was also some kind of pathogens involved too ?

Hi all,

I have to say that I'm really disappointed with some of the negativity on this thread. You guys are so knowledgeable and friendly about every aspect of zoos and the community it saddens me to see some of you dismissing this zoo before it's even had a chance to open. Yes, the hype will turn out to be misdirection. But you are all smart people - you know that a zoo can't possibly open straight out of nowhere with endangered species, because they have to start somewhere.

I was massively upset to watch Blackbrook go, but if the infrastructure is still there then why can't this be a viable option.

I say instead of dismissing it, lets rally round and support it. You never know, with us all on side it may well get a chance to be something special. I for one will be knocking on the doors when it opens!

Well said you, sometimes there is way too much negativity buzzing around this site, i say good luck to them and wish them well.

Completely agree, I'm just glad someone bought the site and is trying something different, I wish them luck! I'm getting abit frustrated reading so many complaints, 'oh I'd rather have this species' or in house fighting!

Just read that link:

"Co-owner of the new Peak Wildlife Park, Jake Veasey, said: "We have deliberately called it a wildlife park instead of a zoo as we are not going to have animals behind bars or in cages."

"With the large habitats we are creating, visitors will have time to share the space with the animals to provide a magical experience in conservation."

[snip]

"We are also hoping at some point to have a tiger as I have been looking after tigers for 15 years and we want to provide a research venue for their conservation."

Not sure a walk-through tiger exhibit will pass the health and safety inspector.

From those pictures, it looks quite nice really.

Does anybody want me to upload a scan of an old map of Blackbrook map? I'm not sure of the year though.

Feel free to upload a scan :) it is possible one of us will be able to date it from the map anyhow.

Is a new gallery going to be created for Peak Wildlife Park? Or just kept in the Blackbrook gallery?

I personally think a new gallery needs creating as Peak Wildlife Park will not be anything like the much loved place that Blackbrook was to many of us!!!
