I received a reply to my email to Perth Zoo this afternoon, regarding their orangutan breeding plans for 2021. I was interested to know if any of the females would be breeding, assuming Sekara (1990) was the most likely candidate. They replied their preference is to breed from Pulang (1993) instead, so that her daughter, Lestari (2012), could observe her mother raising an infant. Pulang’s previous mate was Hsing Hsing (now deceased).

Today, the zoo shared a photo on Facebook of their male Sumatran orangutan, Dinar (1987), interacting with Lestari (2012) in same exhibit space - suggesting he’s been introduced to her mother, Pulang (1993). Here’s hoping this introduction leads to the first Sumatran orangutan infant born in the region in almost a decade this year.

Its interesting how many zoos nowadays adhere to this principal- female Apes learning by example. My personal theory is they don't need this at all, rather success depends on strong maternal instinct- I know many apes that have been perfect mothers without ever seeing another infant apart from their own. It might help, but I remain doubtful.

State government pledges $30 million towards Perth Zoo's masterplan:

Perth Zoo has had a quiet few months in terms of news so I looked up any recent articles and came across one from three weeks ago. The state government has promised the zoo $30 million dollars for the realisation of their masterplan namely a large upgrade of the orangutan exhibits and overhead tunnels for tigers and sun bears. This brochure outlines some of the key developments that will be undertaken. Expanding from the plans already mentioned, projects include creating an aerial walkway for their orangutans and rotational exhibits in the African savannah: https://perthzoo.wa.gov.au/perthzoowebsite/media/perthzoo/7111-Master-Plan-2018_V19_web.pdf

Premier Mark McGowan might have spent his time being entertained by the giraffes, but it’s the lives of Perth’s orangutans which is about to get better if he wins the election next week. In a photo call surrounded by inquisitive giraffes at the Perth Zoo today, Mr McGowan yesterday pledged $30 million to make improvements to facility. Giving orangutans better living quarters, he said, was a priority. “Some of the things I want to see done as part of this investment will especially be around the orangutans.

“The orangutan enclosure is quite old, and they are highly intelligent creatures and clearly threatened in the wild. “If you improve the enclosure for the orangutans, you can improve the prospects of them breeding and improve the conservation programme so that we can assist in preserving that amazing species. “But in addition to that, there will be Tiger tunnels and Bear tunnels where they can walk around above you.

One of Perth Zoo's oldest numbat has died at the impressive age of 11.
It's a sad day for the Zoo family, as we farewell Numbat, Kirra. At 11 years old, she was the world’s oldest female Numbat Kirra was hand reared from just 14grams. Despite her rocky start, she became an excellent mother, giving birth to 20 young, making an amazing contribution to the species’ conservation. Many of her offspring have also gone on to breed both at the Zoo and out in the wild! Kirra had a friendly, inquisitive nature but in her later years she was known for her grumpiness, but who could blame her at that grand old age. Goodbye Kirra, she will remain a legend and will forever hold a place in our memories.

Binturong Pregnancy:

Perth Zoo have been hinting at a new pregnancy of one of their Asian species on their social media. Reading the comments, the zoo have confirmed the pregnancy is not from their red pandas, gibbons, orangs, otters nor sun bears. One person guessed binturong and the zoo confirmed it. This will be the zoo's third litter of binturongs that follows the twins born in 2017 and 2019 respectively to their pair imported from Singapore.

A giraffe calf has been born no details on gender or when

This female calf is the third offspring of Armani and Kitoto:

0.1 Kamili (07/03/2018) Armani x Kitoto
1.0 Inkosi (07/10/2019) Armani x Kitoto
0.1 Unnamed (03/09/2021) Armani x Kitoto

Ellie (the five year old female from Australia Zoo) is due in October, which means for the first time in 24 years, Perth Zoo will have two giraffe calves. The last time was in May 1997 when Misha gave birth to Shani; six months after Marama had given birth to Jandamarra in November 1996.
