I received a reply to my email to Perth Zoo this afternoon, regarding their orangutan breeding plans for 2021. I was interested to know if any of the females would be breeding, assuming Sekara (1990) was the most likely candidate. They replied their preference is to breed from Pulang (1993) instead, so that her daughter, Lestari (2012), could observe her mother raising an infant. Pulang’s previous mate was Hsing Hsing (now deceased).
Today, the zoo shared a photo on Facebook of their male Sumatran orangutan, Dinar (1987), interacting with Lestari (2012) in same exhibit space - suggesting he’s been introduced to her mother, Pulang (1993). Here’s hoping this introduction leads to the first Sumatran orangutan infant born in the region in almost a decade this year.
