Perth Zoo Perth Zoo News 2025

Everyone check the website it has updated and now says Permai has left!
Via email from Monarto, they have indeed confirmed Permai departed this morning;

We’re excited to share that Permai has officially left Perth Zoo and is now on her way to Monarto Safari Park!

Upon arrival, Permai will be given time to settle in and adjust to her new environment. This quiet period will ensure she feels comfortable and secure before meeting Burma and exploring her new habitat.

Like I said in my previous post, it’s clearly animatronic dinosaurs. Australian zoos are obsessed with them, with them recently having done the rounds at Zoos Victoria.

Kids seem to like them and it’s something to fill the exhibit with in the short-term; though personally I take my kids to the zoo to see animals - not animatronic dinosaurs and playgrounds.
According to 9news, permai’s trip will be 36 hours

That sounds reasonable. It’s 29 hours by car - factoring in the truck won’t be going full speed; and also allowing for stops on the way.

The whole African precinct redevelopment won't be able to start until Putra Mas leaves so this makes sense as a temporary solution to filling the habitat up in the meantime.
Does a new plan for the area already exist or is the old planning document and map posted up here earlier with African species being able to transfer to neighbouring exhibitry still largely valid).

BTW: I am glad the Asiatic elephants are leaving Perth Zoo as it never has been the best marriage for each. Personally, I would go and vouch for an updated Asian section with some additional Asian species than just Sumatran tiger, all the Asian species up north-east side of the zoo (sun bear, gibbons, otters and Komodo dragons) orang utans (an outlier now with the Asiatic elephant exhibit effectively emptied....! I was specifically thinking of Asian rhino and some deer species. Ideally, I would love to see Malayan tapir also ....., but that episode was thoroughly screwed with the manner of tapir husbandry and accomodation features in Australasian zoos.... (well enough of that!).

I would have preferred to see that bull Putra Mas had moved much earlier (the entire musth period could have been easily avoided - these cycles are also a bad predictable and certainly in a long established bull at Perth Zoo rn) ..., but realise their logistics were off at Monarto (allthough not insurmontable in my personal opinion ...).

BTW: For what it is worth I do feel Australasian elephant management is far too cautious with their approach to animal transfers, inter-birth intervals and generally adopting more modern state of the art best practice in elephant management and husbandry.

This is the latest masterplan, which indicates the original concept of rotational exhibits within the African Savannah has been revised:

For reference, this was the previous edition:

The two largest Savannah exhibits will house a medium sized breeding herd of giraffe (with a further 1.2 giraffe expected to arrive): and a non-breeding trio of 1.2 Southern white rhinoceros (including the older bull, Memphis; and two cows from Dubbo).

The transfer of Putra Mas to Monarto Safari Park is an excellent opportunity to him to potentially go into a breeding situation. With Permai transferring today, it represents the continuation of a new era in elephant management regionally, with elephants housed in multigenerational herds - hopefully with reduced birth intervals.

We now have a date for Putra Mas. He will depart for Monarto mid-late June. (Obviously subject to change depending upon his mood and behaviour)

Like you say, this is very much an estimate as it’s an unknown until crate training recommences in April/May (once his musth cycle comes to an end) how much of his training he’s retained.

Given the intelligence of these animals, I’m fairly optimistic they can for the most part pick up where they left off and the extra month or two is as much around compounding the training he’s had; and giving the staff confidence that when moving day comes, it’ll go off without a hitch.
