Perth Zoo Perth Zoo News 2025

Does anyone know will the zoo get any new White cheeked gibbons since the current exhibit holding the Javan gibbon might become empty since from what I have been told the Javan gibbons will be on the lake. But it would surprise me if the Binturong will be relocated where the Javan gibbons are currently.

Not sure but this space may potentially be used for the Orangutan expansion long term.

Perth currently have three White Cheeked Gibbons, including one young female who remains unpaired (whether this may be at Perth or elsewhere). If they intend to retain the younger female and form a second breeding pair; this exhibit could be used in that case.

Perth’s white-cheeked gibbons are as follows:

1.0 Kayak (1993)
0.1 Jermei (2002)
0.1 Lulani (2019)

There are no un-paired unrelated mates in the region for Lulani. While it’s possible one could be imported, I consider it more likely she’d transfer to Rockhampton Zoo to form a non-breeding pair with their lone male, Nakai (a close relative of Lulani).

The exhibit could be used for lemurs in the interim until the space is needed for redevelopment.

I don’t see the exhibit holding lemurs since the Primate trail has lots of empty exhibits that could hold lemurs with most of them being former Lemur habitats. The most likely thing to happen in my opinion the Zoo will move the Binturong in the Current Javan Gibbon enclosure or the Zoo will get a new animal like a South East Asian Bird or Primate. And there is a small enclosure between the Sun bear habitat and the current White Cheeked Gibbon enclosure the exhibit use to hold Red Ear Sliders but during Covid the Red Ear Sliders passes away and the exhibit currently holds nothing and is blocked of by potted Plants.

The exhibit in the pass use to hold the Asian Small Clawed Otter and American Alligator. The Exhibit is still standing today just empty and blocked of I would love to know what you think would be a good animal for the exhibit?:)

From socials:

We’ve recently welcomed a new mob of meerkats!

These four girls have been settling in behind-the-scenes in our vet department, and keeping our vet nurses on their toes

In the coming weeks, these adorable new additions will be moving into the African Savannah.

That is some very good news they have probably can for the African Savannah expansion. Any idea what Zoo they came from?

That’s nice did any thing change in Amazonia? And do you have a picture of the poles being put up or the electric fence being taken of? I hoped you had a great time:)

Ok after sometime will the two mobs be able to live together?

The comment from the zoo implies they will be kept seperate, noting the territorial nature of the species. It would also be inadvisable to introduce a mob of four to a mob of equivalent or greater size.

From what I’ve seen, many new packs formed in zoos have been from one male introduced to one female; or two males to one female. In the wild, females are evicted from their natal group by 2-3 years by their mother (as they’re seen as a threat to her status and an infanticide risk to her pups). Conflicts between sexually mature females in captivity are common (though same-sex groups of females are usually more stable long term).

If breeding is to occur, I’d expect one of the four females to be removed from the group (they might even wait to see if a hierarchy dispute necessitates this); and then paired with one or two males.

The new female meerkats are named Nairobi, Tswana, Kasani and Tuli. :)

Yeah that make sense i’m hoping the Zoo does want to breed them. But I think the new Meerkats have something to do with the Masterplan.

The masterplan mentions expanding the habitat, so that supports the assumption the zoo are planning to breed. An expanded exhibit would be greatly under-utilised by a non-breeding group of four females.

It’ll be sometime before the exhibit opens, so the females will likely remain as non-breeding group for a while. Their ages haven’t been stated, but they could well be 1-3 year olds who were needing to move on from their natal group. Melbourne and Dubbo have both had a string of births within that age range.

Since the Zoo has plans to expand the exhibit will the Zoo move the exhibit or will the Zoo expand the exhibit into the Cape Porcupine? And I have heard there will be a playground near the Meerkat exhibit where will that be located?

The fact they say expand, if implies it’ll be an extension of the current exhibit. Many zoos mix Cape porcupine with Slender-tailed meerkat.

Yes, the masterplan mentions play tunnels for kids running alongside the meerkat exhibit.

That would be a great mix Slender Tailed Meerkats and Cape Porcupine I hope the does this mix and maybe the playground might have tall slide the kids can see the Porcupines.

The next few Months for Perth Zoo will be busy since the Primate Crossing Opening April I spoke to one of the construction workers when he was walking out of the Construction site and he said it will open around mid April and then the Zoo is planning Bakari move to Australia Zoo and the Zoo is also Planing for the two Female Rhinoceros to come later this year and the Zoo is planing the future of the African Savannah future and Putra Mas departure mid 2025 and the Dingo pups coming most likely end of Autumn according to @Johnpaul21. I know this is not necessary to post just wanted to point out how busy the next few months the Zoo will be
