Perth Zoo Perth Zoo News 2025

During the grand opening of the new Main Lake exhibit yesterday at the Perth Zoo members morning event, I was informed whilst they wished to have the gibbons out on display in their new exhibit that due to the unfortunate still born they would remain in their new night quarters for the weeks to come whilst Jermei heals...

-The pregnancy had seemed to go better than her previous one last year up until the final moments.

-My thoughts are with the Perth Zoo team and Jermei :)

I believe the infant that was stillborn last year was full term; and had the infant born this year not been delivered by caesarean (a decision made once labour failed to progress), then it would have had the same outcome, given the infant was weak upon delivery.

Whether they would consider taking a proactive step to deliver a future infant by caesarean is a possibility. It would increase the odds of survival, but come at other costs - including increased risk of rejection of the infant.

Swing on in to our new Gibbon Crossing!

Today, Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn MLC helped us launch our new immersive habitat, the Gibbon Crossing .

This state-of-the-art addition cleverly uses our vertical space to triple habitat size for our family of White-cheeked Gibbons.

Using overhead rope pathways, the gibbons will be able to brachiate right above you as you enter the Zoo!

These small apes are one of the most agile and acrobatic primate species and it’s pretty incredible to watch in action. Get ready for plenty of swinging and singing on your next visit!

Perth Zoo have Dingo again:

From socials:

We're so excited to share that we've welcomed two dingo puppies! The 10-week old sibling pair arrived from Victoria in recent weeks.

For now, the duo will be living behind-the-scenes in our vet department while they acclimatise to their new home.

Many of you would remember we said sad goodbyes to our beautiful senior dingoes Daku and Mirri over the last couple of years. They inspired a love for the species in all of us, and now these little pups will create a whole new generation of dingo lovers.

We'll let you know as soon as they're ready to move into the Australian Bushwalk, but please be patient - it'll be a few weeks!

That's so great they have dingos again. It's cool all the dingo puppies there are at the moment, now with the two at Perth, but also Socs, Muffin & Rusty and Daphne, Fred & Velma at Featherdale thanks Osedax for the news about the dingo puppies there (they've given them 'Scooby Doo' names obvs').

More footage of (thats 1.0 Kayak right? or one of the Javan gibbons? thought looks darker like Kayak maybe) way high up on the top ropes of the new aerial lines:

I’m wondering if it’s one of the Javan gibbons as I can see a second gibbon on the pole and Jermei will be inside recuperating for a while yet. It’s possible we’ll see her six year old daughter Lulani out and about; but socials posts imply Kayak will remain with his mate. Given the strong social bonds between pairs, I’d be surprised to see him venture out without her.

Can confirm Kayak is out and about with Lulani! Both of them swinging about enjoying the sunshine :) both are very cool to watch as they swing, flip and jump around but no sign of Javan Gibbons or Jermei as expected.

Are all the Javan Gibbons moving to the islands? I saw two on display near the Red Pandas when I was there on Tuesday, but I must say I haven’t been keeping much up to date with them or their plans

They should have three (pair plus their now older offspring). So if they're still there, it seems they might not be moving across - or at least haven't already.

Ah fantastic, thanks Jambo. I did think that it seemed like the two islands were attached via more aerial ropes but I could be misremembering as I spent most of the time staring up and out at the main island

Do you guys know if its meant to be a timeshare on the aerial lines between the Javan gibbons (the ones who do move there) and the white-cheeked gibbons? or that they will all have daytime access at the same time, given its a big aerial circuit and link with the two islands, so space to have distance between them all if the gibbons wish.

It will definitely be rotational access, with gibbons being highly territorial. This will also create a sense of novelty. Auckland’s Siamang rotates access to the aerial lines with the Bornean orangutan and both groups are excited when it’s their turn.

Has it been confirmed the Javans will be moving across too? From the website info on the new Gibbon crossing construction it looks like it'll just be the White Cheeked Gibbons.

Oh if that's the case did not realise. Had assumed it would be both species either sharing the new setup, but with some distance to manage given the distance the aerial lines allow, or a timeshare basis (thanks Zoofan' for info about their territorialness, I had thought that was more down to individual personalities, some could and some couldnt without fighting). But if that's the case, didnt realise.

Yeah, I had thought the same as you but thought I'd double check as it didn't look like the Javans had even moved across yet. @Tigergal reports she saw them in their previous enclosure only a few days ago.

Here's the link (info about the WC Gibbon individuals is present as well):

Thanks Jambo appreciate, oh ok yeah so they'll be in the '99 built aviary like exhibit still, maybe will have some expansions when that area gets redeveloped in next few years really hoping for, am sure they probably will get.

Hope Jermei is doing ok. Was nice seeing footage of Lulani also out swingining on the new lines with Kayak in a brief glimpse. Mentions how they will be in the night quarters at times of the day spending time with Jermei of course which is why some peope wont see them at some points.

Update on white-cheeked gibbon Jermei:

Jermei has recovered well following her caesarean. She remains off display, but is expected to be on exhibit soon.

Oh that's so great to see her and that she's going well, thanks for sharing that.

She’s on display atleast she was today (I saw that post earlier and was surprised when I saw her)
