During the grand opening of the new Main Lake exhibit yesterday at the Perth Zoo members morning event, I was informed whilst they wished to have the gibbons out on display in their new exhibit that due to the unfortunate still born they would remain in their new night quarters for the weeks to come whilst Jermei heals...
-The pregnancy had seemed to go better than her previous one last year up until the final moments.
-My thoughts are with the Perth Zoo team and Jermei![]()
I believe the infant that was stillborn last year was full term; and had the infant born this year not been delivered by caesarean (a decision made once labour failed to progress), then it would have had the same outcome, given the infant was weak upon delivery.
Whether they would consider taking a proactive step to deliver a future infant by caesarean is a possibility. It would increase the odds of survival, but come at other costs - including increased risk of rejection of the infant.
