Phase-In Species for the US?

I think it would be great to see Asiatic lions in the US. The other subspecies that I think should be brought into captivity is the mountain gorilla. Even though the population is small, they are in a very unstable part of the world. It would also be nice if South China tigers could be brought in. I never knew that Amur leopards were all impure specimens in the US.

I don't think any are left today, but Mountain Gorillas used to be held in captivity but they didn't do well. I'm not just talking about the 1900's, but into recent years. I don't know if they still have them but the Antwerp Zoo in Belgium had Mountain Gorillas up until, at least, 2008. They had Eastern Lowland Gorillas there as well at that time.

South China Tigers (pure South China Tigers are Extinct as well. Same with Barbary Lions) are only found in captivity in China and in a facility in Africa. They are breeding them in a semi-wild state and teaching them to hunt on there own so they can be reintroduced back into the wild.

There's Tsavo Lions (Panthera leo nubica) as well.
 
Doesn't San Diego have Tsavos?

I (and many other zoochatters) just want to see a Platypus.

I don't think the San Diago Zoo or the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Lions are Tsavos. They all appear to have manes and don't all Tsavo Lion males lack manes? Where'd you aquire this information from?
 
San Diego's elderly female (atleast 20 years old) Transvaal lion isn't mixed in with the pair in Elephant Odyssey as due to her old age and the bond between that pair, it would be highly unlikely that she'd be well accepted (and in turn, things could go deathly sour).

Oh I see. So I guess no Tsavo Lions in the U.S. then.:(
Are most Lions in the U.S. Transvaal (South African) Lions (P. l. krugeri) with the occasional generic Barbary?

The only pure subspecies lion in the united states are P. l. krugeri. All others are hybrids of unknown provenance.
 
Even though many authorities recognize Asian Elephant subspecies, AZA still doesn't so many subspecies of Asian Elephants may have and mabye still are being phased-in to the U.S. I'm pretty most Asian Elephants in the U.S. (the ones born here at least) are just as pure as our Amur Leopards or mabye a little less but many zoos, like the Bronx, hold Indian Elephants. The Smithsonian National Zoo told me they have 0.1 Indian Elephants and 0.2 Sri Lankan Elephants and the Oregon Zoo has an elephant named Chendra which came from Shabah to breed and is a Bornean Pygmy Elephant. I find it rediculous that they're breeding the countries largest bull Asian Elephant with a little female Bornean Pygmy but that's what they're doing and since it's not working through normal breeding, they're trying AI.

Smithsonian holds 1.1 Sri Lankan Elephants, not 0.2. And they're trying to breed Chendra with Tusko, who is not the largest Asian bull elephant in the US, that's Packy.

Really! I must have misread the email. I can see how I got confused the way the worded it. How'd you know they had Sri Lankans? I had to email them.

You haven't seen a skunk!!:eek: I've seen two species of skunk (Striped and Eastern Spotted). Both at the Bronx Zoo and one Striped in the wild. Have no skunks made it to Australian (where I assume you've seen the Platypus since they aren't anywhere else in captivity) or New Zealand zoos?
