Phoenix Zoo Phoenix Zoo News 2022

Was it a good idea to go to the zoo today in this heat? Probably not? Do I regret it? Nope!
I’ve gots some news!
  • There’s some new colorful animal silhouettes near the entrance to the zoo’s parking lot. There’s a giraffe, some meerkats, and an aardvark?! Is this foreshadowing…? (probably not, but a man can dream!)
  • Bizarrely, the zoo will not be moving their jaguars to the new Big Cats of the Sonoran Desert exhibit when it opens. Instead, they will be acquiring a pair of Sonoran jaguars. Interesting decision (and by that I mean “slightly disappointing”).
  • I was too afraid to ask anyone about the future of the zoo’s elephant program. However, I did get a better look at the construction behind the new elephant exhibit (which had Chutti the rhino in it). The bull elephant cutout was closer to the Forest of Uco, and now there were two cutouts of a lion and an Arabian oryx that may have come from the waterhole diorama on the Children’s Trail. I think they’re building another path down to the other side of the new elephant expansion.
  • Might be a little “what if?”, but I suspect the zoo will become a bachelor facility once Indu passes. There’s way to much elephant-specific stuff around the area for the zoo to completely ditch elephants. All I’m saying is that if you have a wall with a model of an elephant’s butt and a pile of elephant dung, you’re committed to elephants.
  • Auggie the Andean Bear was adorable! So nice to see some younger animals at Phoenix!
  • Got to see the Predator Passage construction from the Arizona Trail. They’ve made some good progress from the looks of it! Looks like the Fennec Fox area is still up, but I think the foxes are elsewhere at the moment (due to being super noise-sensitive). I saw a wooden pole with its top slightly bent inwards away from the path, which I believe will be a place to string up a piece of meat and dangle it over the lions and hyenas.
  • The gift shop is under renovations, and any souvenirs can be bought at the Savanna Grill. I heard the gift shop will reopen by October.
That’s all for now! See you in December or January, because another one of these in summer would be a mistake!

As it turns out, Phoenix will be phasing out elephants once Indu passes. I have also realized that "Giants of the Asian Realm" is not an elephant-specific exhibit name, so I really should've seen this coming.
So are they just going to use the exhibit to house more greater one-horned rhinos, and potentially breed them?

Probably. Chutti is at Phoenix for a breeding recommendation, so I imagine a he’ll be joined by a suitable mate once one is found (and once Indu is gone, I assume).
I find it kind of poetic that Arizona’s last Asian Elephant and first Greater One-Horned Rhino are living right next to each other. One story ends, another begins.

It’s unfortunate that Phoenix will be phasing out elephants, would’ve been wonderful if they had decided to house a bachelor herd.

Nonetheless, it will be wonderful for Phoenix to join the GOHR breeding program but I don’t think Chutti will be their breeding bull considering hes very low ranking and is very well represented in the population. Perhaps his move to Phoenix was just temporary and a new breeding pair will be brought in once Indu passes.

The zoo has replaced their "Rydables" with "Scooter Pals". I am not entirely sure what the differences are, but these motorized ridable animals are a lot of fun. Interestingly Wildlife World added Rydables recently, I wonder if that is one of the reasons they switched.

On September 26th, the zoo announced that they have transferred (0.0.4) black-footed ferrets named Maple, Willow, Acacia, and Cedar, along with 2 adults and another litter to the National Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Center in Colorado in late August in preparation to be released.

Does anyone know if Phoenix has fruit bats on exhibit? They show up on USDA stock lists and in their social media, but I can't find any mentions or photographs of them on the forum.
