Phoenix Zoo Phoenix Zoo News 2023

The rupell’s griffon vulture habitat is complete, though I haven’t seen it. From the maps, it seems to be an open topped enclosure. I wonder if the 13 vultures in the savanna will be transferred to this small area… though if they insist then i’ll trust them they will have a better space. I have never witnessed the flight of an old world vulture *I have seen new world’s fly* so an aviary would have been nicer.

Unlike the old countdown page which I believe can still be accessed as I archived it, the mention of the red ground hornbill being considered are gone. This probably signals that they have decided not to put the ambassadors *Referring to the ambassador hornbills they considered* on exhibit.
They would have been displayed near the old hyena and lion exhibits *which also, back in the 2000s, was the old tiger exhibit*. It has been discussed before bigger information came about this, that speculation of colubuses *which were officially mentioned in the much older pride campaign page* being there. A seems like we missed out on 2 animals which could of occupied this area, and fossa’s although announced 2 times in a pride campaign online news, the fossa’s were scrapped, and it has been over 2 years since the concept art of porcupines, servals, and a nocturnal house containing bats were long scrapped.

To sum it up, the vulture area of the new exhibit is viewable, the 20th-22nd will see celebration of the new opening, and I somberly go over a few tid bits such as fossa’s being considered which I believe was majorly unknown to phoenix zoochatters.

The new exhibit has opened for non members and it contains african lions, spotted hyenas, future meerkats currently containing radiated tortoise, fennec fox and leopard tortoise exhibit, lappet faced and ruppells vulture, amur leopard, then red river hog and thankfully the blue and red ground hornbills were actually put in the old lion exhibit! Spotted dikkop and yellow breasted starling also are near, and there is an aldabra tortoise exhibit nearby, and that is the new exhibit.

A bird was witnessed escaping after almost being crushed to death by a door in tropical flights and survived no injuries but will likely not come back.

Big cats of arizona started construction and the coati’s are closed as a new exhibit for them is being made.

Marabou storks are no longer shown in the zebra exhibit and christmas decorations near by start to appear.

That was today’s update of the zoo. I will post my review and full species list soon.
