On January 7th, the zoo announced their (0.1) fennec fox named Noelle passed away at age 12 the week prior.

The future of the elephant program there seems more uncertain now. But I strongly hope the Indian rhinos are housed temporarily, then they can modernize the yards and barn, bull-proof them, and house either a breeding or bachelor group of Asian elephants once indu passes.
That seems very unlikely, it seems much more likely they don't acquire any more elephants and stick with Indian rhino for that exhibit.

Also on January 7th, it was reported that once their (0.1) Asian elephant Indu passes, they will be converting all the exhibits to hold more Indian rhinos. It was also reported that the zoo will acquire (2.0) Indian rhinos in the future, and at the moment there are no plans on bringing elephants back.

As many zoo elephants are sent to sanctuaries, Phoenix Zoo will end its exhibit after Indu dies

Having 4 male rhinos is insane at any cost!

It's a good setup for rhino, it's not really great for elephants by today's standards.

Here's a picture of Indu from last week fwiw.

It's true that did say for sure they will close down the old asian elephant facility, turn it into an Indian rhino pen and not have elephants for a considerable amount of time. But the last bit of the article does say that they put an idea of perhaps making a nice roomy habitat for African Elephants, but that could be years down the road since they have no official plans for it and they would need to evaluate some of the property before they can confirm it.

The zoo has scads of room to expand if they want to, they would do best leaving that to Indian rhino, it's in the Asian area of the zoo anyway.

My point exactly, which is why I think african elephants might be better for the zoo in the long run. There are some us zoos I have read about that have phased out Asians that lived in antiquated small and not so natural habitats, then quickly brought in Africans to live in great roomy enclosures like birmingham, Fresno, and reid park (they had one asian as a roommate for an African in the older habitat). San Antonio almost initially planned to go that route as well before Mr morrow took over. And now sa plans to do Asians in the coming years.

Thanks for explaining, that all makes sense. ZooTampa/Lowry Park was similar in regards to stopping with Asian and then adding African back when they opened Africa, it was some time between elephant species, however, and they stopped holding after a tragic accident - but still the habitat was way too small for elephants, even by the standards of the day.

The african enclosure in tampa looks pretty large to me.
