I just noticed that there is more information on the zoo's latest master plan on their 2024 calendar than I previously thought. I took photos of the relevant information and attached the images to this post.

I reached out to the AZA regarding the zoo's accreditation..

"Thank you for reaching out to inquire about the current accreditation status of the Pittsburgh Zoo. The zoo is not currently accredited, but is enrolled in AZA’ Pathway Toward Membership program. The Pathway Program is designed for facilities that are between one and five years out from applying for accreditation, and demonstrates a good faith effort to meet AZA accreditation standards on the part of the enrolled institution. You can read more about the program here: Pathway Toward Membership Program.

Additionally, Pittsburgh Zoo is scheduled to be inspected by a team of zoological experts later this year. I hope you find this information helpful, and thank you again for writing."

This is all publicly available, btw. The Pathway page shows all facilities in the program, and then the Upcoming Reviews page shows who is up for the current cycle. The reviews are done in March and September of each year, with the inspections for them taking place during the months in between.

If the zoo is still refusing to do protected contact, they shouldn't be passing.

In the zoo's latest newsletter, they are continuing to generally discuss the master plan. The International Conservation Center is going to be further developed. They also want to have more public access.

This year, the zoo is adding a trackless electric train, add two new films to their Virtual Reality Theater, and a new walkthrough butterfly aviary. Other guest related additions are coming as well.

Zoo attendance for 2023 was 936,483.

A tornado occurred today at the zoo, no animals, keepers, or visitors were injured, however, a tree in the parking lot of the zoo fell onto a nearby car. The zoo is currently assessing the damage.

On May 22nd, it was reported that the zoo suffered damage in several downed trees and damage to fences and enclosures, though they reopened a day later.

Visited today:

*New exhibit/cage under zip line in Jungle Odyssey is empty but has signage for Tamarins (I believe Cottontop) and two-toed sloth.
*The small skunk exhibit in the Children’s Zoo has been dismantled.
*The former CZ’s chicken exhibit has signage announcing it’ll be a home to Bald Eagles.
*The former Alpaca walkthrough now has Wallabies and Kangaroos.
*The former kangaroo yard now has goats and sheep.

Does anyone know if the zoo is using protected contact with their elephants now? I know that they need to have it if they are going to be a part of the AZA again.
I'm wondering this as well. I was just at the zoo for the first time yesterday and all signage within the exhibit shows keepers and elephants with a barrier between them. There were keepers inside cleaning as they prepared to shift the elephants and I didn't see them enter the same space at all.
If they become accredited again, are the odds of them receiving a new bull at the main zoo increased? Their youngest girls should be on their 2nd or 3rd calves by now.
