Via a reddit post, the orangutans will be temporarily relocated to another facility during the construction of their new exhibit.
Is it known which zoo will be the temp holding facility for the Pittsburgh orang utan family group?Via a reddit post, the orangutans will be temporarily relocated to another facility during the construction of their new exhibit.
I reached out to the AZA regarding the zoo's accreditation..
"Thank you for reaching out to inquire about the current accreditation status of the Pittsburgh Zoo. The zoo is not currently accredited, but is enrolled in AZA’ Pathway Toward Membership program. The Pathway Program is designed for facilities that are between one and five years out from applying for accreditation, and demonstrates a good faith effort to meet AZA accreditation standards on the part of the enrolled institution. You can read more about the program here: Pathway Toward Membership Program.
Additionally, Pittsburgh Zoo is scheduled to be inspected by a team of zoological experts later this year. I hope you find this information helpful, and thank you again for writing."
A tornado occurred today at the zoo, no animals, keepers, or visitors were injured, however, a tree in the parking lot of the zoo fell onto a nearby car. The zoo is currently assessing the damage.

I'm wondering this as well. I was just at the zoo for the first time yesterday and all signage within the exhibit shows keepers and elephants with a barrier between them. There were keepers inside cleaning as they prepared to shift the elephants and I didn't see them enter the same space at all.Does anyone know if the zoo is using protected contact with their elephants now? I know that they need to have it if they are going to be a part of the AZA again.
