Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

Tigervalley I counted bout 15 cownose rays in the sand tiger shark.
The Suriname toad exhibit had a black board over the exhibit it was closed idk if there getting another species or if its just temporarly there.
Like team Tapir said the old sea dragon tank now has 10th puffed fish in it.
The zoos one Diana monkey got moved to another zoo bout 3 weeks ago. Never saw that species of monkey wish I did :(
The zoo still has cottontop tamarins but there off exhibit.
Ring tailed penitent are in the first exhibit in the monkey house now replacing black and white rugged penitent.
The zoo plans to get female dams gazelles for its only male and start to fade out the springbok.
The zoo has 2 female komodo dragons that have been in quarantine for 3 weeks now and came from the Czech republic. The LA zoo received 10 of these monoxide from the Czech republic and distributed them through out the U.S.
Tigervalley by the looks at it with the addition of the new animal hospital there won't be any additional viewing for the gorillas.

Thanks for the update jusko88.

It is nice to here about the two new Czech ladies moving into Asian Forest eventually. I wondered when there was not officially announcement via Facebook or the zoo's website about the crocodiles going on exhibit that perhaps there was someone else coming instead.

Is the path the the hospital open yet? If not, the zoo could add another overlook or two by the time the public section opens in 2013 because this path would have to open to the public.

Sorry to here about the Diana monkey because I have not seen them yet. Are the blue monkeys living with the mandrills yet? I know they were alternating, but I was wondering if they are living together yet because that is the plan. Also, did you mean lemur, not penitent?

Are the puffer fish all of the same species?

Where is the Suriname toad exhibit at the zoo?

I was wondering how many cownose rays they got because the end of the video I saw around a dozen of them on screen. I asked the zoo on Facebook to try to find out an exact count.

I am not surprised that the springboks are going to be faded out because they were one of the species mentioned for ICC along with the African elephants and their plans to have the African painted dogs there. They are also adding Andean condors there as part of the National Aviary's new program they want to start to reintroduce members of the species to the wild. It will be nice to have more dama gazelles back at the zoo.

Did you notice if Moja still looks possibly pregnant (but not confirmed)? There is a Baby Day planned for late July. The zoo has a baby sea otter and a baby sea lion with another on the way any day now. With the sad death of Moja's baby and the fact that Azizi is not due until fall, perhaps if she is going to have one, it will be by then.

How were the gorilla troop? They have had a rough week or two. I never got to see the little one. I have not been able to get down there this year yet. I felt like I knew him through all of the photos. It will be sad when I see Moka, Mrithi, and the other troop members for the first time.

When i typed this it was on my cell and have some type of spelling thing on there idk why it said that lol but i edited just a couple minutes ago.

No the path to the hospital is not open yet.
The blue monkey and mandrill are still alternating in that exhibit. there not together yet.
It looked like there could be 3 different species of puffer but i couldnt find anyone in the aquarium to ask what species they were. sry tigervalley
The surinam toad exhibit is the small one right by the electric eel exhibit.
Moja def looks pregnant.
The gorilla troop was hanging out way in the back corner in the shade they seemed kinda sad but i think there ok.

Since quarantine last around a month and the Dragon Renaissance Festival is next weekend, I would not be surprised if the Czech female Komodos make their debut next weekend. It makes sense.

Im suprised though that they have 2 females. i thought he was goin to say a male and female for breeding cause thats one of the reasons for that animal hospital was they were going to start a breeding program with the komodos. maybe they will get a male in the future for breeding purposes.

AH. Moja's pregnancy isn't confirmed to the public, but with in the elephant keeping community it is. Since the zoo stated in a help wanted ad they "Have six breeding females at the zoo and ICC, with one pregnant cow." With Moja being the only one who fits the bill, and with her actually showing, I think it's safe to say she's going to be giving birth any day now... But Moja likes to draw things out, as we all know... When she set the record for the world's longest recorded African elephant pregnancy with Zuri in 2008...

me and my gf saw moja a couple of wks ago her belly looks real big and today myself only saw her again. this time she was by herself in one of the exhibits eating and throwing hay around all over her but her belly looks like shes real pregnant.

I hate it when I do this, but if I was speculating: she was isolated so she could be monitored more closely towards the end of her pregnancy. But that's only speculation of course. And I would say this baby celebration in July is no coincidence. It's safe to say an elephant calf will be the main attraction.

I agree with you gorgeousingray. The only recent pregnancy the zoo has officially confirmed is that of Azizi the black rhino since it has been a half a century since there was a baby black rhino at the zoo. There were never any official announcements for Moka's and Zoey's pregnancy. Maggie's pregnancy was made public only because of Zoey giving birth and the fact Maggie is due any day now. The zoo could use an elephant baby around now since the zoo is still grieving the death of Moka's baby.

Press Release on Zoey's Baby Girl

Female Baby Sea Lion Born

(Pittsburgh) (June 2012)—It’s a girl! Sea lion mom Zoey gives birth to her second pup at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

“We are all very excited,” says Dr. Barbara Baker, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. “Zoey and her pup are vocalizing and the pup is nursing, which is a very important part of the pup’s development.”

The mortality rate for a sea lion pup is 10 to 15 percent during the first month and is strongly dependent on the formation of a bond between pup and mom. These bonds are built through vocalization and nursing. “Zoey is a great mom and she is very attentive to her new pup,” says Dr. Baker.

The new baby is the second pup for Zoey, who is also mother to 3-year-old Sidney. “At first Zoey was very protective of the baby,” says Henry Kacprzyk, curator of Kids Kingdom and reptiles. “But after a couple of days, Zoey relaxed enough to let the other sea lion members near the pup. Especially curious were Sidney and Sophie, another young sea lion, who kept trying to get close to the pup and were chased away by mom.”

Keepers were able to weigh the new pup and found that she is 18.4 pounds, which is a healthy weight for a newborn sea lion. “As long as the baby is continuing to nurse and vocalize with mom, we won’t interfere,” says Mr. Kacprzyk.

In the coming weeks, the pup will learn to swim. “Pups instinctively know to start paddling in the water, but being young, they tire easily and need mom to help out,” says Mr. Kacrpzyk. “Zoey is always right there with the pup and helps if needed. We also put little steps in the pool that the pup can use to get out of the water.”

The little pup taking the plunge isn’t the only thing keeping staff on their toes. They are anxiously waiting the birth of sea lion Maggie’s second pup, due any day now.

Mating season for sea lions is primarily in June and July and gestation is 8 months, but sea lions have delayed implantation of an additional two to three months, so pups are born in the summer when food is more plentiful. Delayed implantation is when the embryo remains in a state of dormancy before it begins to develop. Sea lions normally give birth to one pup, but on rare occasions, twins have been born.

Sea lion pups have dark brown to black colorations when they are born, but their color will fade to light brown within their first few weeks. They are well developed at birth, opening their eyes and vocalizing to their mother. Within a half hour of birth they are able to shake, groom, scratch, and walk. Swimming comes later when the pup is older. A female sea lion is very protective of her pup and she may be aggressive toward the other sea lions and keepers, warning them to stay away.

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Press Release

Heads up. I was at the zoo yesterday and I noticed someone missing from the public exhibits. Moja was not with the rest of the elephants. Tasha, Victoria, and Zuri were together in a group. Nan and Angelina where together in a group. Thabo-Umasai could be seen standing behind the gate to the first indoor exhibit, not too far away from Tasha who was near the door from the main yard. This makes me wonder if we are not far from the arrival of the newest addition to Pittsburgh's herd.

I hope we are, as there have been no births with in the AZA this year, for either Asians or Africans...

On a side note I wonder when Victoria is going to be bred... She's thirteen, and in some cases female elephants first calve at nine... Perhaps they're waiting to get the semen from South Africa so they can AI her? I guess time will tell with that.

If Victoria was to be bred right now, it would have to be through AI or she would have to move to another zoo with a bull since Thabo-Umasai he just turned 6 in February. She is likely to have to help watch Zuri right now when Moja finally gives birth since Moja will have her hands full with the baby. One correction: Technically Victoria will not be 13 until September 12th.

This experience with Zuri really is preparing her for motherhood which is great. I know that it would be through AI. But isn't that how we assume Moja got pregnant? Considering Jackson's at the ICC and has been since December of 2008... Unless it was Callee, which I don't find likely, but it is possible!

There are two other possibilities. I have been wondering if the father could have come from Operation Frozen Dumbo. My other thought is that I suppose the father could be a male from another institution just to add a little diversity at Pittsburgh since three of the females are currently Jackson's children. One slight correction from your previous post gorgeousingray. Jackson moved to Somerset in December of 2008.

I'm goin to members night at the zoo. So if any of you zoochatters have questions you want me to ask let me know.

See I hoped the pregnancy had come via project frozen dumbo as well, and then the zoo released an article last year, which said that they have not been given the ok to import the semen...
I'm thinking the father is either Callee (which I consider unlikely) or a bull from another facility, which could as well be Jackson at the ICC

sorry for the date mix up... December, 2012, hasn't even happened yet....

When the zoo does get the ok to continue operation frozen dumbo, I see Savannah and Victoria becoming pregnant not too soon after...
