Planet Zoo Planet Zoo!

Unexpected that they put Chinese pangolins in the game. Not a very common captive species. Aren't the ones at Leipzig Chinese? If so that's probably the reason but odd they didn't add giant anteaters instead.

Bit disappointed they didn't add any African rhinos, penguins, polar bears, jaguars or marsupials. I can understand why not marsupials as they could come bundled in an Australasian expansion along with e.g. emus, platypus, etc. but the others seen vital to a zoo simulator, given what we've already got.

My game doesn't have Komodo Dragons, Pygmy Hippos, or Thomson's Gazelles, even though I purchased the deluxe edition. Anyone know what might be going on?

I'm going to wait for them to release birds and aviaries before considering getting the game.

My assumptions for DLCs will be Australia, South America, Arctic (Penguins, Polar Bears, etc.), Birds (Possibly?), and then I'm assuming there will be building sets as well.

I'm 99% certain that all of the animals you mention will be coming down the line. I feel like some animals were removed for dlc purposes... Pretty happy with the roster on the whole, though.

Getting around 70 animals when they originally said 50+ is amazing. A lot of people speculated that it would only have around 53-55 animals when they said 50+. A lot of the animals they revealed are also awesome additions to good zoo games. Bonobos, Chinese Pangolin, Nyala, and Japanese Macaque are all examples of species we rarely see.
I've got the game downloading at my house right now, so hopefully I can play it when I get home. When you see thousands of bonobos roaming around my zoo, don't be surprised.

My first thought is that it’s very overwhelming but I’m just going through the tutorials with the annoying Welsh woman. I think I might also need to look at some tutorial videos on YouTube as I’m finding fences quite difficult. In general working the camera and moving around feels a bit too fiddly but I guess I will get used to it.

I haven’t really seen any animals out of the tutorial challenges as you can’t just plonk them all down to look at them in game like you could in ZT2 for example. But what I have seen is stunning. It’s a really beautiful game and the animals I have looked at are superbly done on the whole.

On the subject of animals. No surprises in the final game which is a bit of a disappointment but maybe that’s my own fault for reading leaks and datamined lists. Interesting that there were a few datamined species which haven’t come up.

There are a few puzzling choices. I really don’t get the Himalayan brown bear being in the game at this stage. Fair enough if all (sub) species will eventually come out but with a limited selection at this stage it just doesn’t make sense. I’d have stuck to just the grizzly and Formosan black bears and if they really wanted a third I’d have had the sun bear or Andean bear.

Pangolins are interesting but not really suited to large open enclosures like the ones we have to build in the game. Giant anteater would have been a much better choice. I guess you could do something glass enclosed in a tropical building.

I’d have saved the bonobo for a dlc and gone with a gibbon species.

Australasia, South America and Europe are pretty much absent and the lack of any kind of polar species too suggests dlc content to come.

It's a shame South America isn't well represented. I should be able to fit all the neotropical animals in one building.

Just for fun, I have tallied up how many animals there from each continent:

Africa - 35
Antarctica - 0
Asia - 18
Australia and Oceania - 3
Europe - 1
North America - 8
South America and Caribbean - 12

There is a clear African bias, though this is not completely unexpected. I hope that future DLC evens this out.

I've been thinking about this all-day
Maybe it's for an already prepared DLC that the magazine had access to? Or maybe confusion for other species?

I am thinking at a lot of our South American and Australian friends will be in a DLC. I bet Dik-Diks will be in a DLC too.

I'm expecting DLC's of all the continents to be fair
And also, if I get dreamy, I want an avian, aquatic and small mammal DLC's.
And if we get a hoofstock DLC I would be really happy.

The dik-dik was mentioned in a single article by a writer not connected to the game. They also mentioned baboons. I wouldn’t assume they are in the game based on this source, it looks to me like they were just talking hypothetically about random species.

Yeah, but don't you think it's a really odd animal to choose? I get the baboons but, dik-diks?

I currently don't have the game (both of my computers can't run it) and want to wait on what others say about it before investing, but I will say this on the roster: we were going to have to face the fact that a lot of animals we wanted weren't going to make the cut. I have no doubt that Frontier is planning on keeping many species held-back for dlc in the future, which stinks but when you think about it, which everyday player is going to want to buy an Australian pack and not expect kangaroos? Or an African pack without large mega-fauna like rhinos? These dlc needs charismatic animals to man the handle and to encourage people to purchase them.

I will say this about the roster, there were only a handful of choices that I was unhappy about. I'm still confused by the Himalayan brown bear, still seems very unnecessary to me. I would've chosen an Andean bear instead since we already have two different Asian bear species, and that would give us another south american animal. I also don't understand how there are aardvarks and pangolins in the game, yet leave out the most popular insect-eating zoo animal (giant anteater)? I would've also removed the nyala and thomson's gazelle with more unique hoofstock (nilgai to fit the Indian theme, and aoudad so we have a goat/sheep while keeping the largely African theme of the game. I surprisingly don't have a problem with a Bengal and an Siberian tiger both being in the game as it gives us two animals to place in two different themes. I also think that the aldabra tortoise could've been swapped for something like a bird like a crane, stork, or pelican species. Lastly, I wish that the terrarium animals were more diverse; we have a lot of invertebrates with a lot of overlapping (lots of spiders, not enough of creatures like stick insects), and I also think there could be more amphibian (we only have frogs), and reptiles (two iguanas and gila monsters for lizards, six snakes, and no turtles or small tortoises).

That being said, I like this roster. There are still absences that should be in the base game (jaguar, leopard, polar bear, penguin, otter, meerkat, deer, African rhinos, sheep/goats, kangaroos, baboons, new world monkeys) but keep in mind, it's perhaps the most biodiverse base game roster in zoo gaming history; which other zoo-simulator can you get all four great ape species as base animals, and contains cockroaches and beetles!? And as mentioned, although there are blaring absences, we actually have a lot of the animals that we complained about in Frontiers zoo tycoon games that were left out (gorillas, orangutans, zebras, ostrich, cheetahs, wolves, bison, pandas, old-world monkeys etc.).

I completely agree.
