Planet Zoo Planet Zoo!

No more sequels please, PLEASE, is this their way now? Releasing very hyped but half finished games? That f***ing sucks and I sincerely hope Frontier doesn't pull up a JWE2 move here

It's not like they're going to support any game forever. At some point, they'll stop updating and making new DLC for Planet Zoo. They gotta move onto other things. But maybe some years down the line, we'll get a sequel.

Well, they actually can if there's no competition in the genrea, and in the case of PZ, there isn't any serious competition; but now that so many people instilled in me the fear of another JWE2 scenario, I won't buy any DLC untill the end of 2022, if we get more than 4 months without a DLC, that's the signal that we're gonna get a sequel, and I didn't waste my money in a half finished game

How is the 4 months a signal? What makes that the difference rather than just they aren't supporting the game anymore?

We usually get DLCs every 3 to 4 months, if they don't release anything along with a dead silence about it, it's the signal that a sequel is coming

Or they may just stop working on Planet Zoo and not bother with a sequal?

What can they do to drive sales for a sequal? Zoo Tycoon had a massive up grade in the game. Is flying bird enough? not for me.

I agree, I really don't see that there's enough they could add in to upgrade it for a sequel for quite a while. Offhand, I can only think of four major things that are missing and/or have been included in past zoo builder games.

1. Flying birds. Really the jury is out on this one still. Hypothetically they should have the ability to do it, but will they?

2. True aquatics. Looking potentially promising given some of the files recently discovered. Easily one of the biggest mod categories, we'll have to wait and see if Frontier gives us anything official.

3. Extinct animals. While often included in past zoo builders, I doubt they would ever come officially to PZ. Given Frontier is releasing JWE2, it makes zero sense to include extincts in an established game and steal the thunder off the new game.

4. First person keeper mode. Definitely a major perk of ZT2, and I was a little surprised when PZ didn't follow suit. Whether this is something addable in a future major update I don't know, and frankly I don't really think we'll get it at this point. Which is a shame, since even though we can angle the camera to mimic the idea, we can't actually care for the animals ourselves.

Given that points 1 and 2 may still arrive, and 3 is almost a certain no, there's really not a ton of justification for a sequel in my opinion. That said, JWE recieved a sequel only 3ish years later so who knows?

I doubt that. The game isn't going to be supported forever, but I also doubt that a sequel will be released very soon after they stop supporting it. Frontier isn't a massive game developer, they have other projects and they can't work on lots of big games at once. Planet Coaster got its final update two years ago and there's still no word on a sequel, and that game sold really well.

I also think the economics of zoo games don't lend itself well to rapid sequels. (Jurassic World: Evolution doesn't really count here since its a licensed property and thus plays on different rules) The market for decent zoo simulators seems to be pretty limited, and it's expensive and time-consuming to make a big video game like this. If you release your sequel too soon, players who are still getting a lot of enjoyment from the first game won't buy it unless there are some MAJOR new gameplay additions.

And because zoo games are a fairly niche market without much competition, Planet Zoo is probably going to be bringing in decent money for a while. Just look at how long the Zoo Tycoon 2 modding community went. I wouldn't expect a PZ sequel for at least five years after the final DLC is out.

Also to add on here, I definitely agree from looking at the Zoo Tycoon franchise.

Zoo Tycoon - 2001

Zoo Tycoon 2 - 2004

Zoo Tycoon (Xbox) - 2013

Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection -
2017

So three to four years between first and last, with a nine year gap between the middle two. (Note that for the first two there were expansions released in their gaps.) Looking at that along with Planet Coaster, I really don't anticipate a sequel shortly after the end of DLC. Doesn't fit the general trend.

I really really doubt Frontier will release (or even announce) a sequel to PZ within months (or even years) after publishing their last DLC for the game. I think this game will have quite the long tail, as it's the only recent zoo builder on any platform.

And the short gap between the first two games is the result of advancement in technology. Zoo Tycoon 2 had 3D graphics and could bring in features that the first game couldn't have had. If they wanted to release a Planet Zoo sequel in two years, there aren't many meaningful new features that they could add that would justify a whole new game. Remember, a sequel wouldn't just be the old game game with new features, it would be almost a totally new game, that's a lot of work.

As for Jurassic World: Evolution, that's a licensed game that both profits from and promotes a franchise. Whether those games get made isn't Frontier's decision, the company would just look for another studio to make it if Frontier refused. Frontier probably gets extra money from that anyway.

This image has recently been put on the official Planet Zoo Instagram page. While it is definitely a lemur, it has that ruff of fur under the neck that is absent in either of the current in-game species. A lot of the talk is that this could be a free animal for the second anniversary of the game (which is the 5th November) and that it is probably the black-and-white ruffed lemur.

Nice a free Species.

Is this purposely attempting to look like a "Who's That Pokemon?"

Most of these literally have 0 chance of making the roster. Too obscure and too small.

Giant Anteater
Geoffroy Tamarin
Lesser Capybara

Uh, we have Giant Anteater in the SA DLC...
